Hi, tzdata version 2008f introduced a rule for Argentinian DST based on http://www.worldtimezone.com/dst_news/dst_news_argentina03.html and http://www.impulsobaires.com.ar/nota.php?id=57832 Unfortunately those links only speak about rumors of a DST change, there is nothing fixed officially, and according to some Argentinian people DST may even not happen this year. Until an official decision is taken it is probably a lot better to remove any DST rule for year 2008. Please find attached a patch to do that. Regards, Aurelien -- .''`. My timezone seems to have just changed to Argentina Summer Time $ date "+%H:%M:%S %z %Z" 01:39:17 -0200 ARST If this change was correct, I'd expect to have heard something about it in the news. *Spring* started a few weeks ago, not summer. Is it really supposed to start now?

Hermosillo timezone

To David Hancock The offset is wrong for the airport MMHO Hermosillo in your data because you encoded it wrongly as America/Chihuahua, while it should be America/Hermosillo. You had a typo in the email which spelled it Hermisillo, I don't know if that is a simple typo when sending or it was the root of the problem. yearistype.sh questions

Why is the file "yearistype.sh" in tzdata*.tar.gz instead of tzcode*.tar.gz (where it is used)? What is the purpose of copying "yearistype.sh" to "yearistype" during make? It seems unnecessary to have two copies of a file. Thanks for your time. Steve Ward

Offset for America/Chihuahua possibly wrong?

Our company provides flight-support services to business aviation, and we use the TZ database from our web-based flight-planning pages to allow date entry in local or Zulu time. One of our Mexico-based customers called to say our offset was wrong for the airport MMHO (Hermisillo). We're getting GMT-6 from our Olson database. We called two places at that airport, and both report that they are GMT-7. The specific timezone reference is America/Chihuahua, and we are using the 2008f dataset. Does anyone have any clues about the America/Chihuahua offset? It's not due to go off DST until 10/26, but it appears to be off by one hour NOW. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. According to Federico A. C. Neves and Herton Ronaldo Krzesinski there are some exceptions to the rule of ending DST Third Sunday of February in Brazil, which seems to be correct. Shapefiles for tz timezones and maps for 2008

I am pleased to announce a first version of a shapefile for tz timezones of the world, available at <http://efele.net/maps/tz/>. There is still work to do: clarify some details, define a strategy for Greenland and Antarctica, clean up the US portion, figure out the licensing (the goal is something like CC-BY-SA or GFDL, at least for the parts I have rights to), so consider this a beta version. Also, no guarantee for now that the URLs will be stable. If you don't know how to deal with shapefiles, you may still want to look at the pages, I have included maps as pngs. There are also a number of freely available tools to view and/or edit shapefiles, such as OpenJump. I have also generated a couple of maps to visualize 2008 at <http://efele.net/maps/tz/2008>. They may be helpful to QA the tz database itself. I have many folks to thank for their help in producing all this (see the thanks page), but I want to particularly thank Gwillem Law, Jesper Nørgaard Welen, Chris Walton, and of course the tz team. Suggestions are welcome, Eric.

Wikipedia divides the Marshall Islands in the Ratak Chain (Sunrise Eastern) and Ralik Chain (Sunset, Western). Majuro is part of the former, and Kwajalein of the latter, but I'm not sure if geographic/administrative regions can be directly related to timezones, so that everything in one Chain belongs to that timezone (that would certainly be an easy solution, probably too easy). In that case you are right that Maloelap, Erikub, Wotje, Ailuk all should belong to the Majuro timezone - it would also mean the following additional changes >From Majuro timezone to Kwajalein timezone: Ailingalap, Namorik, Jabwot, Namu, >From Kwajalein timezone to Majuro timezone: Bikar. ============ Eric Muller wrote ========================================= You may want to check the licensing terms of your source data. World Time Explorer (a Windows program that I made) includes a shapefile that is including all tz timezones. Additionally, it contains a DBF file for the shapefile that both represents the names of the shapes, but also connects each shape to WTE's own timezones. Note that often a given timezone spans many little pieces since the land surface is split into many islands. The only problem of mapping the tz timezones to the WTE timezones is just the naming convention, for instance the tz timezone Europe/Uzhgorod is in WTE "Ukraine, Uzhgorod". In most cases this should be straightforward, but some might need a little bit of "digging". Timezones are present in the city.txt file with an "@" in front, and represents the subsequent cities not having an "@" in front. You can use WTE to calculate the map colors for any given time since 1850 till today, where each color represents a given GMT offset. On the other hand I consider the shapefile to be publicly available, although I have not supplied it with a proper GNU free license or similar license. P.S: I use "timezone" instead of "time zone" deliberately, although I perhaps agree that "time zone" is better English grammar. One reason is that the Danish language would always put together the words to a single word with a new independent meaning, in Danish "time zone" is "tidszone". But also it is clear that a Google search for "time zone" gives a whole lot of hits for articles referring to time and another pile of hits referring to zone, which really have nothing to do with "time zone". Just my 2 cents.
