Asia/Jakarta timezone acronym is misleading

The acronym used in Asia/Jakarta timezone is WIT (Western Indonesian Time), where in Indonesian language, WIT means Waktu Indonesia Timur (Eastern Indonesian Time), so it's rather confusing, especially if the conversation (say in Indonesian Wikipedia) is done in Indonesian language, and the user add a signature with the timemark, it will assume WIT is the Indonesian abbreviation, which is of course not. FWIW: The ECMAScript folks are working on globalization stuff for JavaScript, including looking at timezones... The end result including the code and the data, gzip-compressed, is about 74 KB. I keep hoping I'd get a chance to make some additional improvements before announcing it, but that served only to delay announcing it and not to lead to additional improvements. Rule names

Can anyone please advise on where I can find the Rule name history for each country/region? The data I'm interested in is as follows: - AQ, Oz: I don't know to which area/country this is referring to as it is not listed on tiscali - C-Eur, E-EurAsia - are these valid/active rule names in use? or used parallel? not sure if any of them is a historic name for Europe that's why I'm looking for archived rule names. I believe some of these were used up to some point in the past and then switched to a new name... zdump no longer reports gmtoff

Using ubuntu 12.04 LTS Using tz 2012 j code/data Tested each timezone mentioned in zone.tab, by zdump-ing each one. Observed that each timezone had two lines that reported NULL, then a bunch of nice-looking pairs-of-lines, then two lines that reported "NULL" I understand that this could be caused if you are using a 64 bit ubuntu on a 32-bit machine.... ...I may have !!! migrated to a 32-bit ubuntu on a 32-bit machine... The lines at the earliest/latest transition for each timezone are no longer "NULL"-containing (they mention 1901 and 2038, which I understand) What is breaking my heart is "Why did the lines drop off the gmtoff value, now ending with the isdst value?" Saw somewhere that tm_gmtoff is a GNU extension that may not be visible... Please "illuminate" Thanks, Jim

I recently added time zone support to our product, and life would have been easier if the time zone files had their file name in them so that they 'knew' what they were. How come they don't? Archived Rule names

Hi team, Is there a list of outdated rule names that are not in use anymore? I found rule name "oz" which is supposed to be a code for Australia however the tiscali only mentions AN, AS and some other similar codes. I assume this is a historical code but I do not find this info on any of the websites. I have problems with some other as well: C-Eur AQ E-EurAsia Please advise. I noticed other non-bd sites with BdST. None of the sites (for either code) seem persuasively authoritative. References to BST are 1-off references, whereas the news site uses BdST consistently, but it's just one site. I notice that Wikipedia has been using BdST for some time. (Not that I'm saying it's a good source, and it didn't cite its references). I suggest that the lack of good references is maybe because Bengali doesn't use the Latin script? I can understand why someone may want to distinguish their abbreviation from BST though. What has been the past policy for determining these abbreviations? Particularly for non-Latin scripts, &/or where it may be difficult for us to find, read, &/or transliterate any native-language sources? -Shawn

Proposed bill to abolish the Daylight saving time in Ukraine

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine has submitted a bill to abolish the daylight saving time. If approved, new bill will go into effect on March 1, 2013 and Ukraine will use UTC+2 year around.
