Hey all, Is there a reason why the Europe/London and Europe/Dublin Zone definitions are outside the "Europe" section that starts on line # 449 in the "europe" data file? For consistency sake, shouldn't those two sections be moved under the "Europe" section where the DST Rule for "EU" is defined? thanks danvin

Help With Understanding the Binary Files

Could somebody please help me interpret the tz binary files? I'm having trouble understanding what to do with the two arrays that follow the leap second array. 1. tzfile.h says that they're "indexed by type"; but I don't see anything in the "type" (which I take to mean what tzfile.5 calls "struct ttinfo") that could be used as such an index. Does "indexed by type" mean "having the same index as the type", in other words, the value from the array following the transition time array? 2. tzfile.h seems to imply that these booleans indicate how I should interpret the values in the array of transition times. Is that correct? If so, how do I calculate standard time while DST is being observed given that the SAVE column in the Rule has been lost? Do I assume that the offset for DST is always exactly 1 hour? What about solar89, etc.? 3. tzfile.5 says that these "are used when a time zone file is used in handling POSIX-style time zone environment variables." Does that mean that the "transition times" are the ones in the TZ variable, not the array of transition times in the file (so my question 2 is moot)? I'm very confused. 8-( Thanks, --Bill Seymour

However, looking at the Microsoft Timezone definition [Dec 2009 update] for (GMT -4:00) Manaus [Central Brazilian Standard Time] the timezone observe DST from 3rd Saturday of October 23:59:59 to 3rd Saturday of February, 23:59:59. Also, another non-official site seems to imply the same: [http://www.icfsi2007.com/city_more.php will show Time Manaus Time Zone is 1 hour less than Brasilia, Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro Time Zone (GMT - 03:00), four hours behind of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), except during the period between late October and the end of February, when daylight saving time is in force (GMT - 05:00 hours). ] So either a) I do not interpret the timezone rules properly for America/Manaus, and there is a DST being observed there. Given the note about how "putting ethnic labels on the time zones may be somewhat divisive in an already very unhappy and divisive time," can someone come up with a better approach to the Xinjiang situation than the "first pass" sent out on the list last month? I'll hold off on making any changes until we have something better. --ado
