Hello, we use your database to make astrological calculations. With regard to the time zone of Paris from 1945 to 1976 it results a strange data that conflicts over other resources credited as Shank, according to your database in 1971 the Time zone Paris was 0. factory zone abbreviation

(I'm not on the mailing list. Please CC me on replies.) The `abbreviation' for the Factory timezone isn't valid for a TZ variable specification. I have discovered this because I have a tzfile parser in Perl that follows POSIX rules strictly for the TZ-format rule part, and I've started applying it systematically to the Olson database. This is the only zone that it has a problem with. The POSIX rules for TZ, as described in the Theory file and available online at <http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/basedefs/ xbd_chap08.html> among other places, prohibit spaces in the abbreviations. Factory's abbreviation is a sentence with words separated by spaces. I see it's grandfathered past zic's test for POSIX validity, but the intent behind that seems to be more about the length than about the spaces. I don't have a problem with the length: my code doesn't impose any fixed length limit. (POSIX allows implementations to limit the length to six bytes or higher, but doesn't oblige them to.) You could fix this by changing the spaces to dashes. The result is POSIX-valid, and also avoids violating the expectations of naive parsers of date(1) output that expect the timezone abbreviation to be just one word. The downside is that it slightly impairs readability to humans. POSIX systems are also still allowed to object to it if they do impose a small TZNAME_MAX. What are your thoughts? -zefram

Hi, I am trying to understand the database file format and have a question regarding the rule definition of Asia/Tokyo and Asia/Karachi. Both time zones seem to be valid but I cannot see that from their definition in the database. java tz updates

Hi, Apologies if this is a bit off-topic as it's specific only to java timezones. The latest 2010k updates for java are not (yet) freely available from Sun. ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tzdata-versions-138805.html ) I have not looked into it, but I assume if I pay I could get the update. For Linux there there is a package "tzdata-java" which updates /usr/share/javazi/ but this does not used by the Sun JDK. Anyone know is an alternative to updating the Sun JDK timezones? I can of course program something - cases like Egypt changing time for Ramadan are fairly rare. Thanks Al

Inconsistency in zoneinfo binary files?

Hi, I hope that this is the right list to ask this question: I am having trouble in comprehending the zoneinfo binary files: I have a version 2 file for Amsterdam which gives me 180 transition times and 13 transition types in the first block (all of which look fine to me). But the second block yields 181 transition times and 14 transition types. The additional transition time is 1971-02-07T06:08:44, which seems rather weird to me. Regards, Roland

Error in time zone for Egypt

Hi! I think there's an error in the time zone description of Egypt for 2010: during Ramadan, Egypt switches back to standard time and at the end of Ramadan it's daylight saving time again. This is the respective rule: Rule Egypt 2010 only - Sep 9 0:00s 1:00 S However, Ramadan seems to end at midnight between the 9th and the 10th of September (it lasts 30 days, which includes the 9th). See http://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/egypt-ends-dst-2010.html So the rule should be: Rule Egypt 2010 only - Sep 9 24:00s 1:00 S Or Rule Egypt 2010 only - Sep 10 0:00s 1:00 S I'm not 100% sure about all this (I'm no expert), but as the other sources in the time zone file don't mention a specific switch time, I think the rule needs to be corrected. Hi there, I am a bit confused by the definition of some Australian timezones in the database, maybe someone could shed some light here... When I look at Melbourne for example, I see: [...] Rule AV 2008 max - Apr Sun>=1 2:00s 0 - Rule AV 2008 max - Oct Sun>=1 2:00s 1:00 - # Zone NAME GMTOFF RULES FORMAT [UNTIL] Zone Australia/Melbourne 9:39:52 - LMT 1895 Feb 10:00 Aus EST 1971 10:00 AV EST It looks like there is only one valid timezone abbreviation, which is EST! EST seems to change its offset whenever Australia/Melbourne changes from dst or back? Isn't that more than confusing? How would one know what time "4:15pm EST" is?! Or am I only misreading this? http://www.travelmath.com/time-zone/Australia/Melbourne tells me: "The GMT offset is currently UTC/GMT +10 hours (EST). It will change [...]. Clocks will roll back once more on Thursday 30 September to put the nation on winter time, as stipulated by law. Mosslem Shaltout, professor of solar-space physics and vice-chairman of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS), said Ramadan will start, atronomically speaking, on Wednesday 11 August. According to Shaltout, the moon's crescent will appear at 6:08 AM on 10 August, when the moon is on the same level with the sun and earth, marking the beginning of Ramadan. Mosslem Shaltout is said to refer to an August 10 crescent moon, and also is said to refer to an August 11 start of Ramadan. We also have this at http://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/egypt-ends-dst-2010.html: DST ends and clocks will move one hour back at midnight (00:00) between Tuesday August 10, and Wednesday August 11, in 2010. Egypt will revert back to DST after Ramadan and move their clocks forward at midnight (00:00) between Thursday, September 9, and Friday September 10, 2010. Egypt will end its 2010 DST schedule at midnight (00:00) local time between Thursday, September 30, and Friday, October 1. Perhaps the clearest translation to rules is: Rule Egypt 2010 only - Aug 11 0:00 0 - Rule Egypt 2010 only - Sep 10 0:00 1:00 S The first rule behaves the same way as what's now in the "africa" file; the second rule restarts DST a day later than what's now in the file. --ado

I think the point in time in the sentence "clocks will move back by one hour at midnight on Tuesday 10 August" should be interpreted as 2010-08-10 00:00.
