Olson Timezone Database does not have Australian daylight timezones

Hi. I have 2 change requests for the Olson Timezone Database I noticed today that the Olson Timezone Database has incorrect timezones Australia. I noticed this in an application running on Sun's Java VM. Sun's Java VM uses the Olson Timezone Database as its timezone reference. The application returned the correct time but appended the incorrect timezone. The application returned "22 Oct 2008 at 15:54 EST" The application should have returned "22 Oct 2008 at 15:54 AEDT" Could the Australian timezones in the Olson Timezone Database be corrected to report daylight timezones during periods of daylight savings. Further to this, the Australian timezone names in the Olson Timezone Database are not at all consistent with the timezone names published by the Australian government. The Australian government has a complete list of Australian timezones at http://www.australia.gov.au/Time. Could the Australian timezones in the Olson Timezone Database be updated to the timezones published by the Australian government. Thanks. symlinking /etc/localtime in zic.c

Hi, I recently used 'zic -l' on a machine where /usr is on a different filesystem than /etc and I saw the lines where this happens (in the dolink() function). Up until some time, I didn't know about "-l" and used to create a symlink from /usr/share/zoneinfo/What/Ever to /etc/localtime At that time, I was about to ask if it wouldn't be better to create a symlink rather than a copy, but then I found out that linux distros prefer to make a copy rather than a symlink because /usr might not be mounted during boot and /etc/localtime would be pointing to no file... http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=346342 http://www.redhat.com/archives/rhl-devel-list/2006-April/msg00019.html Now... IF the first result = link(fromname, toname); fails, it is quite probably an indication that /usr is on a different filesystem than / ... woulnd't it be better in that case to copy rather than symlink it? Discrepancy between zone.tab ordering and northamerica details

We just ran into a bug at work where users in US Central Time were identified as being in America/Indiana/Knox instead of in America/Chicago because code was running through the list of time zones in zone.tab looking for the first one that matched the current GMT offset and DST state, and America/Indiana/Knox is currently observing CDT and ordered before America/Chicago. I hope this is actually a use that the file ordering is intended to support, but even if it isn't, the zone.tab file seems to be misleading for some Indiana towns. In particular, northamerica says that Petersburg is Eastern and Knox is Central, but zone.tab says that Petersburg is Central and Knox is Eastern. I've attached a patch to bring zone.tab into line with northamerica, at least for these two places. Eric

And, I whilst I can find instances for the use of the standard(?) 'MEZ-1MSZ-2' I have been unsuccessful in locating any equivalence for 'MEZ-1MSZ' itself. Is MSZ equivalent and a widely accepted acronym matching MESZ, and if so where and how typical is its use? How does it differ to the 'MEZ-1MSZ-2' standard? Can you/anyone advise on the practice of employing 'MEZ-1MSZ' as a POSIX TZ value or indeed how prevalent its use is, or in which region (likely related to honouring DST somewhere in the vicinity of Berlin?) and whether this is directly equivalent to other common/standard names, such as CET-1CEST? Hi, I had a browse through your site and messages searching for the reason Java had not been updated with the changed DST dates for Eastern Australia, as Java indicates that they depend on results here. I noted a request for Australian DST information, but also noted that your database hasn't included recent changes to some of the Eastern seaboard DST dates. The Australia/Sydney zone in particular changed to DST on October 5th, and in future years the change will be on the 1st Sunday in October, and will end on the first Sunday in April. I believe the southern states are also in line with this. Argentina DST switch on October 19 is not official

Hello tzdata maintainers, in https://launchpad.net/bugs/278419 we first handled the recent Argentina DST change and uloaded 2008g to all stable Ubuntu releases. However, now there are some followup comments which say that is not at all clear whether October 19 will actually switch to DST, as indicated by the current rules. The last comment subsumes this as "I think the problem is that there are no official sources saying that DST will start on 19th October, so there isn't really any source to reference to. That dates seem to be a rumour from an unofficial news site. Until an official announcement is made, it should probably be assumed that there will be no DST starting in October." I can just play messenger here, and I don't speak Spanish either, but I thought notifying you about possible problems would be a good idea. Settling this soon would be good, since it always takes a while until tzdata package updates are actually downloaded and used by people. Hi, Looking at current times coming from the tz-database http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/xtra/tzdatepick.html The daylight savings offset for the following (atleast) haven't been taken into account: Australia/Melbourne Australia/Sydney Using the icu java classes http://www.icu-project.org/ to read from the tz-database is producing the same results. Doing some testing, the daylight savings offset doesn't come into effect until doesn't start until the 26th October. But has in actual fact daylight savings in Melbourne and Sydney has already started (5th October). Mauritius DST yet again

A contact in Mauritius tells me that the time for switching back to standard time is incorrect. According to the summer time bill[1], "period of summer time" means ... the period (i) beginning at 2 o'clock standard time in the morning of the last Sunday of October in any year; and (ii) ending at 2 o'clock standard time in the morning of the last Sunday of March in the following year; There's also the following wording on www.gov.mu though: It will start at two o'clock in the morning on the last Sunday of October and will end at two o'clock in the morning on the last Sunday of March the following year. Syria still on DST

Syria is still on DST, contrary to the dates they announced earlier this year, and since current tzdata says it ended on 2008-10-01, the current timestamps are wrong. The Syrian government has not yet announced when DST will end. Based on what we were able to find out, it will end on or around 2008-11-01, but the exact date will probably be announced soon.
