West Wendover NV time zone

Vernon Cole claimed to me that we need a new time zone for West Wendover, Nevada. After checking the case I think he is right. West Wendover lies close to Wendover, Utah, but according to state border application they are on Pacific time while Wendover is on Mountain time. West Wendover seems to have a history long back of using Mountain time for convenience, but that use was never official. The main reason is that every most relations to other geographic locations close-by will be using Mountain time, and the bigger cities on the Nevada region are 100 miles or more from West Wendover. Apparently real problems began in the eighties and nineties when the city council began to insist on using Pacific time officially. In 1999 the DOT approved an application from West Wendover about shifting to Mountain time officially and on a permanent basis, using DST etc. The exact moment of application was opportune, the 31.st. of October 1999 at 2:00 PDT (GMT-7) when most of Nevada went back to PST (GMT-8) then West Wendover just stayed on GMT-7 (Mountain Standard Time). The case of the Nevada northern border (Jackpot, Owyhee, and Mountain City), which is also using Mountain time is different, because they seem to have been using Mountain time "always" so they can use time zone America/Denver. US Report on DST released

Bug in Argentina timezone

I'm forwarding this message from Phil Guera, who sent it by way of a secure mail server. --ado Florence, I did some programming to read this information. Basically, the information is given in the area that Microsoft calls TZI. It's a complicated element to decipher, but if you give me the timezones you are interested in, I can give you screen shots of the interpretation of the registry binary data. I wrote this TimeZonesExplorer just before Microsoft added some historical capability to their registry's handling of timezones, and never did update it to read the historical data, but the way MS stores the info is based on the zone, current year, and subset of yearly historical data. Though their treatment of historical data doesn't go back in time very far like the TZ database does. I'm still running Windows XP pro, but I believe the registry is structured the same on Vista at this time. At any rate with the screen shots, you should be able to see the basics of how to make the binary data more human readable. It's just a matter of splitting the TZI info into parts and performing some hex math conversion to get to the actual information contained within it. Except for the Provincial Bank (Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires) that must keep the same timetable in the whole Province... The man-page describes a fairly loose fileformat, but the actual files show less loosness: there is no quoted sharp (#), all one name s Rules are in a bunch in time order, with no other Rule or Zone in between, all weekday-names are three-letter-long abbreviations of capital letter and twain small letters. Can I afford to count on that, or is it really needful to pars a much looser-formatted file than really is there?

Olson Timezone Database does not have Australian daylight timezones

Hi. I have 2 change requests for the Olson Timezone Database I noticed today that the Olson Timezone Database has incorrect timezones Australia. I noticed this in an application running on Sun's Java VM. Sun's Java VM uses the Olson Timezone Database as its timezone reference. The application returned the correct time but appended the incorrect timezone. The application returned "22 Oct 2008 at 15:54 EST" The application should have returned "22 Oct 2008 at 15:54 AEDT" Could the Australian timezones in the Olson Timezone Database be corrected to report daylight timezones during periods of daylight savings. Further to this, the Australian timezone names in the Olson Timezone Database are not at all consistent with the timezone names published by the Australian government. The Australian government has a complete list of Australian timezones at http://www.australia.gov.au/Time. Could the Australian timezones in the Olson Timezone Database be updated to the timezones published by the Australian government. Thanks. symlinking /etc/localtime in zic.c

Hi, I recently used 'zic -l' on a machine where /usr is on a different filesystem than /etc and I saw the lines where this happens (in the dolink() function). Up until some time, I didn't know about "-l" and used to create a symlink from /usr/share/zoneinfo/What/Ever to /etc/localtime At that time, I was about to ask if it wouldn't be better to create a symlink rather than a copy, but then I found out that linux distros prefer to make a copy rather than a symlink because /usr might not be mounted during boot and /etc/localtime would be pointing to no file... http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=346342 http://www.redhat.com/archives/rhl-devel-list/2006-April/msg00019.html Now... Discrepancy between zone.tab ordering and northamerica details

We just ran into a bug at work where users in US Central Time were identified as being in America/Indiana/Knox instead of in America/Chicago because code was running through the list of time zones in zone.tab looking for the first one that matched the current GMT offset and DST state, and America/Indiana/Knox is currently observing CDT and ordered before America/Chicago. I hope this is actually a use that the file ordering is intended to support, but even if it isn't, the zone.tab file seems to be misleading for some Indiana towns. In particular, northamerica says that Petersburg is Eastern and Knox is Central, but zone.tab says that Petersburg is Central and Knox is Eastern. I've attached a patch to bring zone.tab into line with northamerica, at least for these two places. Eric

Hi, I had a browse through your site and messages searching for the reason Java had not been updated with the changed DST dates for Eastern Australia, as Java indicates that they depend on results here. I noted a request for Australian DST information, but also noted that your database hasn't included recent changes to some of the Eastern seaboard DST dates. The Australia/Sydney zone in particular changed to DST on October 5th, and in future years the change will be on the 1st Sunday in October, and will end on the first Sunday in April. I believe the southern states are also in line with this.
