To David Hancock The offset is wrong for the airport MMHO Hermosillo in your data because you encoded it wrongly as America/Chihuahua, while it should be America/Hermosillo. You had a typo in the email which spelled it Hermisillo, I don't know if that is a simple typo when sending or it was the root of the problem. yearistype.sh questions

Why is the file "yearistype.sh" in tzdata*.tar.gz instead of tzcode*.tar.gz (where it is used)? What is the purpose of copying "yearistype.sh" to "yearistype" during make? It seems unnecessary to have two copies of a file. Thanks for your time. Steve Ward

Offset for America/Chihuahua possibly wrong?

Our company provides flight-support services to business aviation, and we use the TZ database from our web-based flight-planning pages to allow date entry in local or Zulu time. One of our Mexico-based customers called to say our offset was wrong for the airport MMHO (Hermisillo). We're getting GMT-6 from our Olson database. We called two places at that airport, and both report that they are GMT-7. The specific timezone reference is America/Chihuahua, and we are using the 2008f dataset. Does anyone have any clues about the America/Chihuahua offset? It's not due to go off DST until 10/26, but it appears to be off by one hour NOW. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. Carnival Sunday in Brazil

According to Federico A. C. Neves and Herton Ronaldo Krzesinski there are some exceptions to the rule of ending DST Third Sunday of February in Brazil, which seems to be correct. Shapefiles for tz timezones and maps for 2008

I am pleased to announce a first version of a shapefile for tz timezones of the world, available at <http://efele.net/maps/tz/>. There is still work to do: clarify some details, define a strategy for Greenland and Antarctica, clean up the US portion, figure out the licensing (the goal is something like CC-BY-SA or GFDL, at least for the parts I have rights to), so consider this a beta version. Also, no guarantee for now that the URLs will be stable. If you don't know how to deal with shapefiles, you may still want to look at the pages, I have included maps as pngs. There are also a number of freely available tools to view and/or edit shapefiles, such as OpenJump. I have also generated a couple of maps to visualize 2008 at <http://efele.net/maps/tz/2008>. They may be helpful to QA the tz database itself. I have many folks to thank for their help in producing all this (see the thanks page), but I want to particularly thank Gwillem Law, Jesper Nørgaard Welen, Chris Walton, and of course the tz team. Suggestions are welcome, Eric.

Hi, is there a reason why zones of Argentina are named Zone America/Argentina/[location] (example: America/Argentina/Mendoza) while all others seem to follow a different convention, i.e Zone [continent]/[location] (example for country Brazil: America/Recife)?
