This continues in the series of moving entries to 'backward' if they exist only because of obsolete tz rules about country codes. This change does not affect any time stamps after 1970. Catching up on some old business, I've pushed this proposed patch to the experimental repository. Comments welcome. ----- * asia (Asia/Dili, Asia/Jakarta, Asia/Pontianak, Asia/Makassar) (Asia/Jayapura): Use WIB/WITA/WIT rather than WIT/CIT/EIT, since it's typical to use Indonesian-language abbreviations even when writing in English. I surveyed the Internet and Google Books and found several independent English-language sources using WIB/WITA/WIT, whereas it seemed only tz-inspired sources used WIT/CIT/EIT. Problem reported several times, by George Ziegler, Priyadi Iman Nurcahyo, Zakaria, Jason Grimes, Martin Pitt, and Benny Lin; see Lin's summary of the reports in <http://mm.icann.org/pipermail/tz/2013-February/018609.html>. This change does not affect time zone offsets, just alphabetic abbreviations, such as tm_zone in the BSD-style struct tm. The source file localtime.c includes the definitions for structures used in the binary (compiled) zone files. I am writing code which accesses these compiled zone files. In localtime.c, function localsub() are these three lines of code: 1295 icycles = tcycles; 1296 if (tcycles - icycles >= 1 || icycles - tcycles >= 1) 1297 return NULL; I do not understand the reason why lines 1296 and 1297 exist. icycles and tcycles are equal. Their difference is always zero. Why test for it being not zero? PS: the reason why I am asking: I try to understand the source code of zdump.c It calls localtime() frequently, and has some cryptic code which depends on whether localtime() returned NULL. Therefore, I try to understand the conditions under which localtime() returns NULL. If that would be documented somewhee (I may have overlooked it), it would be great, as it is rather hard to understand it out of the terse code.

Timezone in Suse?

Does anyone know where the currently selected system time zone in stored on Suse? I thought it was in /etc/localtime, but apparently not. Perhaps I need to call a c routine and ask the system? localtime.c issue

This compilation error from the localtime.c in 2013d looks like an actual problem. I think time_t is generally an integer type of some sort. Built using the clang compiler on Linux. localtime.c:1517:34: error: implicit conversion from 'double' to 'time_t' (aka 'long') changes value from 0.5 to 0 [-Werror,-Wliteral-conversion] register time_t half_second = 0.5; ~~~~~~~~~~~ ^~~ 1 error generated. A recent paper by Felix Weinhardt of the Spatial Economics Research Centre of the London School of Economics and Political Science argues that daylight saving time increases electricity use in the northern part of the U.S., but decreases its use in the south. The following is a translation of a news flash from a few minutes ago: The Minister of Interior, Gideon Saar, adopted the proposals of the committee he appointed last month to examine the daylight saving time regulations. Saar will publish a draft of a [new] law that will be brought before the government and the Knesset next month so that the new daylight saving time will start already this year and will continue for more than 200 days until the end of October. Morocco DST Interruption

The Moroccan government has recently announced that the country will return to standard time at 3:00 a.m. (03:00) on Sunday, July 7, 2013 local time. Clocks will be turned back one hour. DST will resume again at 2:00 a.m. (02:00) on Saturday, August 10, 2013, when one hour will be added again to the local time. The end and resumption of DST was originally planned to coincide with the beginning and end of Ramadan, which lasts from July 9 to August 8, 2013. Has IANA published these changes? Hello, The file http://www.iana.org/time-zones/repository/releases/tzcode2013c.tar.gz indicated in http://www.iana.org/time-zones as being of size 132.4kb is in fact in un-gzipped format and its size is 522240 bytes (i mean: this is the file i get when i wget the path). tz-announce list is incorrectly configured

Once again, a message has appeared on the tz-announce list without also appearing on the tz list. In this case, it was an announcement that the 2013d releases of txcode and tzdata are available. Please could the tz-announce list be configured such that it is impossible for a message to go to tz-announce(a)iana.org without also going to tz(a)iana.org. tz-announce was always intended to carry a subset of the messages sent to the tz list, not to carry some disjoint or partially-overlapping set of messages. It's unreasonable to expect readers to subscribe to both lists in order to see all messages, and it's also unreasonable to expect people who send announcements to CC both lists to ensure that the tz list receives all messages. Currently I see these rules: Rule Morocco 2013 only - Jul 9 3:00 0 - Rule Morocco 2013 only - Aug 8 2:00 1:00 S I was just informed from the Casablanca Bourse that the exchange will return to standard time on July 7th and that Ramadan will start on July 9th or 10th. Are the current rules incorrectly assuming that return to standard time coincides with the start of Ramadan? Can anyone from Morocco confirm? Thanks, -Andrew

Are there plans to add a time zone for Kosovo? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Kosovo An increasing number of organizations and countries are recognizing Kosovo as a country, and having a representative zone for it would be convenient.
