Need input - minimal tzdata install

Hi, We are trying to reduce the required base installation on containers. We are looking at ways to reduce the amount of timezone data needed. Specifically, we are considering providing a minimal/UTC-only tzdata package. Is this something that the tz project would consider providing? Would the tz project be willing to document a recommended minimum set of files for such an installation? Thanks, Patsy

Tzdata - timedatectl issue

Destruction of timezone history - please revert (typos corrected)

I consider the decision to merge zones of multiple countries, just because they share a common post-1970 history, one of the worst decisions ever made for the TZ project. There used to be Zone Europe/Copenhagen, which represented the exact timezone history of Copenhagen, in fact of all of Denmark, since the introduction of standard time in Denmark in 1890. Now the file 'europe' says # For Denmark see Europe/Berlin. But zone Europe/Berlin is a bad representation of Denmark's timezone history. It gives false data from 1949 backward. The decision to remove zones like Europe/Copenhagen from the main zone files destroys the work of a whole generation of timezone history researchers. It is a completely unnecessary step, forced by nothing. I urge the responsible persons to revert this step.

Question about invalid timezone file: no timezone found in OlsonData

Hello, I have a program running on Yocto. When it runs, I get an error: /usr/share/zoneinfo/Israel: invalid timezone file: no timezone found in OlsonData If I copy zoneinfo's directory from Linux distros (Debian, Ubutnu, ArchLinux), the program runs without an error. I downloaded tzdb-2021a.tar.lz and installed it, encountered the same error. Did I miss something? Thanks. - Joe

Recent changes caused zone.tab to refer to links defined in the 'backward' file, which means it no longer works in the now-rare case where 'backward' is not used. Fix this by changing zone.tab to refer to the primary name of each zone. * checktab.awk: Adjust to check the new setup. * zone.tab: Replace backward links in the 3rd column with the primary zone names. Dear Folks at IANA, Todays Greetings!!, I really appreciate your efforts to design & maintain TimezoneDb While searching on the net, I couldn't find any list where there is a mapping between 2 different set of timezone record schemes. For example "Europe/Vienna" maps to "(CET) Central European Time" So, I prepared a list for the same.(see the screenshot attached), along with relevant record like timeOffsets, countryCode, hasDST, etc., & want to share it with you IF it is of any value for the cause.I used wiki references & some PHP code for the same. If you think that my list is of any value, I will be glad to share the Excel worksheet it with you..
