Funny, I did not know of any exceptions in Nevada, that is also new to me. The exceptions in Indiana (for instance Gary, Evansville and Hammond) are well know to the tz database. The changes in Kansas and Nevada are mentioned below. I have found some interesting information on ISBISTERs page http://www.worldtimeserver.com which I think deserves to be mentioned on http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm by the way (e.g. a link to that page). ISBISTER claims that there are parts of several states that have different timezone information than the default for the state, basically they are: 1. Florida far west on GMT-6.0 with DST (e.g. city Pensacola), in contrast to the rest of Florida which is on GMT-5.0 with DST. 2. Idaho North on either GMT-8.0 with DST or GMT-7.0 without DST, in contrast to Idaho South on GMT-7.0 with DST. 3. Kansas Western on either GMT-7.0 with DST or on GMT-6.0 without DST, in contrast to Kansas Eastern on GMT-6.0 with DST. 4. Michigan Western on either GMT-6.0 with DST or on GMT-5.0 without DST, in contrast to the rest of Michigan (East & South) on GMT-5.0 with DST. 5. Nebraska Western on either GMT-7.0 with DST or on GMT-6.0 without DST (for instance represented by Scottsbluff), in contrast to Nebraska Eastern on GMT-6.0 with DST. 6. North Dakota (South West area) on either GMT-7.0 with DST or on GMT-6.0 without DST, in contrast to North Dakota (North East area) on GMT-6.0 with DST. 7. Oregon East (small area) on either GMT-7.0 with DST or GMT-6.0 without DST, in contrast to the Oregon West area of GMT-8.0 with DST. 8. South Dakota (Western area) on either GMT-7.0 with DST or GMT-6.0 without DST (represented by Rapid City) in contrast to South Dakota (Eastern area) on GMT-6.0 with DST. 9. Tennessee Western on either GMT-6.0 with DST or GMT-5.0 without DST (e.g. Nashville), in contrast to Tennessee Eastern on GMT-5.0 with DST (Knoxville) 10.Texas West on either GMT-7.0 with DST or GMT-6.0 without DST (El Paso), in contrast to Texas East on GMT-6.0 with DST. The interesting about this is also that each region is shown on a little map so you will get a clear idea which part of a state the rule is covering. I don't know if this is authoritative, but it sure looks worth an investigation. If I understand it correctly, tz database is mostly documenting entries without DST as exceptions, not exceptions which cover different GMT offset with DST within a specific state. Just for the record, this is how I interpret the above towards a list of regions based on states: GMT-8.0 with DST: California, Idaho North, Nevada, Oregon West, Washington. GMT-7.0 with DST: Colorado, Idaho South, Montana, Nebraska West (Scottsbluff), New Mexico, North Dakota (South West area), Oregon East, South Dakota (Western part, e.g. Rapid City), Texas West (El Paso), Utah, Wyoming. GMT-7.0 without DST: Arizona. GMT-6.0 with DST: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida West (Pensacola), Illinois, Indiana (Evansville), Iowa, Kansas West, Kentucky West, Louisiana, Michigan West, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska East, North Dakota (Eastern region), Oklahoma, South Dakota (Eastern region), Tennessee West (Nashville), Texas East, Wisconsin. GMT-5.0 with DST: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida East, Georgia, Kentucky East, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan East, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee East (Knoxville), Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia. hello just wonted to tell ever body to stay a way from SMITHY unless you wont to throw a way money i bought a granite 1339 and all tools 5000.00 worth junk you see they had broken it and then put it in a box the box was not damage in any way what so ever but the equipment was broken i called them at 1-800-476-4849 they said they have my money and there was nothing i could do about i asked them a bout the 30 day warranty they said it was up i told them i only had it 2 weeks and then they hung up on me ive called them many times but they wont talk to me when they find out it is me they put me to voice mail and never call me back but they are wrong i bought a mass mailer program and i am sending thes letters out ever day 100000 of them ever day thank you for your time may be this will save some one ther money

Summer time and double summer time in the UK, 1940-6

I may have mentioned before that the records of summer time in the UK from 1940 to 1946 in the Public Record Office were subject to a 100 year extended closure period. After I requested the Home Office to review this extended closure period in February, they concluded after three months that the records could be opened to the public in their entirety (rather than needing to wait until 2047), and after a further three months for the administrative procedure of actually opening them, they recently became available. I examined them (HO 144/22703 and HO 144/22704) yesterday. They serve to confuse the question of whether the double summer time applied was BDST or DBST; both appear in the records, so Howse's DBST needn't be a typo. On 18th April 1941, Sir Stephen Tallents of the BBC wrote to Sir Alexander Maxwell of the Home Office asking whether there was any official designation; the reply of the 21st was that there wasn't but he couldn't think of anything better than the "Double British Summer Time" that the BBC had been using informally. I've put a copy of the Home Office letter at http://student.cusu.cam.ac.uk/~jsm28/british-time/ho-19410421.png and the BBC letter may follow if I get permission from the BBC. The files contain many objections from irate clergymen to the start of double summer time on Easter Sunday in 1942; one entitled "Pilate---Pharaoh---1942" referring to "Scripture history is being repeated this year through decisions of the Government"; another to "the tyrants of Whitehall, who probably never attend church, & even possibly have never heard of Easter". Kentucky county switching time zones

After prolonged debate, and despite continuing deep differences of opinion, Wayne County (central Kentucky) is switching from Central (-0600) to Eastern (-0500) time. They won't "fall back" this year when daylight savings time ends in the US on 29 October 2000. Wayne County residents have strong links to nearby Kentucky cities in the Eastern time zone. discrepancies between tz data and official Canadian time zone site

I'm sending this email both to the Time Zone mailing list <tz(a)elsie.nci.nih.gov> (see <http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm> for more) and to the INMS feedback alias <questions.inms(a)nrc.ca>, as it seems appropriate for both. INMS, the Institute for National Measurement Standards in Ottawa publishes the following information about standard and daylight saving time zones in Canada: http://www.nrc.ca/inms/time/tze.html (home page) http://www.nrc.ca/inms/images/time/Tz99weB.jpg (standard time, 400 kB) http://www.nrc.ca/inms/images/time/Tz99seB.jpg (daylight saving time, 400 kB) http://www.nrc.ca/inms/faq/time.html#daylight The above web pages report the following information about times since 1988 that disagree with the tz data: * Newfoundland and New Brunswick switch at 00:01 local time, not 02:00. * Manitoba switches from CDT to CST at 03:00 local time, not 02:00. Since this reference seems authoritative, I'm inclined to believe these claims and propose the corresponding changes to the tz data, unless somebody suggests otherwise. This will require creating a new tz Zone entry for New Brunswick; normally this would be America/Saint_John but that's confusing given that there already is an America/St_Johns, so perhaps America/Moncton is a better name. Also, the INMS maps show both "legislated time zone boundaries" and "observed time zones", with the following differences. * British Columbia officially observes PST/PDT, but some parts of east BC observe MST/MDT, and other parts observe MST all year (presumably the America/Dawson_Creek zone of the tz data). * A small area of east Saskatchewan observes CST/CDT, not CST. * A small part of Ontario east of the -90 meridian observes CST/CDT even though it's supposed to observe EST/EDT. Another small part west of -90 observes EST/EDT even though it's supposed to observe CST/CDT. And a third small part west of -90 observes EST all year. * Officially, Quebec east of the -63 meridian is supposed to observe AST all year. But nobody observes this. The western part of east Quebec observes EST/EDT; the eastern part observes AST/ADT. * Most of Labrador observes AST/ADT, even though it's officially supposed to observe NST/NDT. The observed time zones are all covered by existing tz entries, except for the part of Ontario that observes EST all year. Does anybody know more about where that is and how long they've observed EST? The maps don't mention the Baffin time zone rebels reported at length on the tz list. Hi, With the Olympics being here in a few weeks, we have started Daylight Savings early. However, I am trying to work out how to alter the australiasia Time zone file In /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo to start the Daylight Savings NOW and end as per normal. I was thinking of putting an entry into the file as such: Rule Aus 2000 only - Aug 25 2:00 1:00 Secondly an Entry in the New South Wales area of Rule AN 2000 only - Aug 25 2:00s 0 Finally an entry in the Zone Australia/Sydney as below Zone Australia/Sydney GMTOFF RULES FORMAT [UNTIL] 10:00 Aus EDST 2000 Aug 25 2:00s Of should the last entry be 10:00 Aus EST 2001 Mar lastsun 2:00s Would this alter the system clock appropriately ?? Or could please you give me some information on how to alter the daylight savings date?
