tzselect.ksh fails under ksh, works under bash

If BASH_VERSION is not set, then tzselect.ksh performs a test in which it attmepts to use the select command, to see whether the select command is available: 84: (eval 'set --; select x; do break; done; exit') 2>/dev/null In the case that the shell is not bash, but the select command is available, then the select command reads a line of input. This is confusing for users, who don't even see a prompt. The attached patch fixes this by redirecting input from /dev/null. I also quoted some variables on general principles. --apb (Alan Barrett)

Here are some more patches to the tz database to cover the proposed time zone changes in Russia. The basic idea is to not do anything drastic like add new zones until the Russian changes are finalized, but in the meantime to assume that the changes will probably happen and to update existing zones accordingly. Greetings, I was recently working on an open source project seeing about updating some code based upon the 2010c version of your timezone code and bringing the code up to date based upon your 2014e version. In the process of doing this, I noticed some unneeded object files being linked together in order to create the zic program. As specified by your Makefile, zic is comprised of zic.o, localtime.o, asctime.o, scheck.o, and ialloc.o But as it turns out, localtime.o doesn't supply any symbols that zic.o needs. Additionally, the inclusion of asctime.o is there in order to satisfy a linkage requirement for localtime.o. So zic can be built by linking only zic.o, scheck.o, and ialloc.o together. A context diff of the proposed fix is attached. Currently, there is no efficient, fast way to ensure that time zone data is updated in a timely and reliable manner on devices that need it. Time zone changes are often delivered as operating system updates, and are thus tied to release schedules that can trail the actual time zone changes by a significant period of time. A service is needed that can provide timely, reliable updates. One added benefit of such a service for iCalendar is the ability for calendaring clients and servers to agree on common, standard definitions of time zone data, removing the need to pass time zone data directly "by value" in iCalendar data. By allowing clients and servers to use time zones "by reference" significant network bandwidth and storage savings can be achieved. This working group will: - Define a time zone data distribution protocol that allows for efficient, timely updates of time zone data to be delivered to clients. This protocol must scale to vast numbers of clients, such as the potential "internet of things" devices, as well as to today's desktop computers and servers. - Define an extension to CalDAV (RFC 4791) to allow clients and servers to use time zones "by reference" to improve the efficiency of the overall protocol. The working group will use the following drafts as initial input for its work: draft-douglass-timezone-service-11 draft-daboo-caldav-timezone-ref-01 The working group will work under the following parameters: - The time zone data distribution protocol will initially be targeted at iCalendar-based clients, but should be flexible enough to deliver time zone data in other formats. - The time zone data will be based on the Time Zone Database (http://www.iana.org/time-zones) but must be able to include any source of time zone data. - The time zone data distribution protocol should also offer an API to allow thin clients to easily make use of time zone data by querying for UTC offsets, offloading the sometimes complex work of expanding recurrence rules to the service. This API should be extensible to support other types of time zone operations in the future. - The time zone data distribution protocol will use current security protocols to protect the integrity and confidentiality of the data as it is distributed, and may also address these issues with respect to retrieval of data from its original source (such as the Time Zone Database). Even public time zone data can represent a significant privacy exposure when it is associated with the user or endpoint that is retrieving it. The following are Out of scope for the working group: - Any changes to the Time Zone Database process or infrastructure, as documented in RFC 6557. However, the WG may work with IANA in order to make integrity checking information, such as public keys, readily accessible for protocol use. - The naming process for time zone identifiers. A rollup tz release would be helpful

There have been a pretty substantial number of refactoring and cleanup changes to the experimental tz repository over the last month, and things now seem to be settling down. Speaking as the person who does a fair amount of the integration of tz releases into Google, I would definitely find it helpful to have an official release that includes these changes happen sooner rather than later. Past experience suggests that there may be a few internal glitches to be sorted through, and I would far prefer to handle them now, while not under pressure to get some low-lead-time rule change deployed in a hurry. We only deploy official tz releases, not informal repository snapshots. Thanks, -- Andy

Precise meaning of FROM and TO in a rule

Sorry to be pedantic again, but I'm trying to get my head round some fiddly code, and I've come across an interesting bit of ambiguity. FROM and TO are described <http://www.ietf.org/timezones/code/zic.8.txt> like this: FROM Gives the first year in which the rule applies. Any integer > year can be supplied; the Gregorian calendar is assumed. The > word minimum (or an abbreviation) means the minimum year > representable as an integer. The word maximum (or an > abbreviation) means the maximum year representable as an > integer. Rules can describe times that are not representable > as time values, with the unrepresentable times ignored; this > allows rules to be portable among hosts with differing time > value types. TO Gives the final year in which the rule applies. In addition to > minimum and maximum (as above), the word only (or an > abbreviation) may be used to repeat the value of the FROM > field. It's not clear whether that "year" is: 1. The year in UTC at the transition 2. The year in the local time before the transition 3. The year in the local time after the transition 4. The year in the same frame of reference as the "AT" part Option 1 seems unlikely. Options 2 and 3 seem likely to be equivalent in all realistic time zones - it would be odd for a time zone to add an hour of DST at 11.30pm on December 31st, for example... and even odder for it to *subtract* an hour of DST at 00.30am on January 1st. Option 4 is tricky. In some ways it feels natural - if you're going to use one frame of reference for a time, why not do it for the date as well? On the other hand, it means that a "TO" value of (say) 2001 where the transition is at 2am UTC on January 1st in a time zone with a standard time of UTC+8 would actually have its last transition in 2000 local time, assuming I've got my maths right. Can I assume that one of option 2 or option 3 is intended, and that no sensible time zone will ever make those two options behave differently? I've tried reading the C source code, but given the subtleties involved, I'd rather trust a natural language description. If we can come to a conclusion about this, I'd like to propose that we amend the text to be unambiguous, too. Jon
