Hello, France uses 'de facto' Eastern time zone 1h. This transition has occurred by a switch to summer time in February 1940. There never was back in the winter time at the time of the meridian of Greenwich. France adopted DST in 1976 (Official Decree number 75 866 on September 19, 1975) so that some say France uses a simple summer time in winter and double summer time in summer but in practice its official time for winter is UT + 1hr East and summer time is UT +2hr East. (Sorry but I do not understand the interest of abbreviations given to time zones). Francis Santoni, Paris

Hello, we use your database to make astrological calculations. With regard to the time zone of Paris from 1945 to 1976 it results a strange data that conflicts over other resources credited as Shank, according to your database in 1971 the Time zone Paris was 0. Can you confirm this and show me the source? Thanks and good job Katia

Below find proposed changes to the time zone package; the executive summary: * asia No DST in Hong Kong in 1977 (thanks to Jesper Norgaard for finding the problem). * zic.c Conditionally output extra types with most-recently-used offsets last (for use by systems with pre-2011 versions of localtime.c, helping to ensure that globals "altzone" and "timezone" get set correctly). * zone.tab Remove obsolete association of Vostok Station with South Magnetic Pole; add association with Lake Vostok (thanks to Petr Machata for finding the problem). factory zone abbreviation

(I'm not on the mailing list. Please CC me on replies.) The `abbreviation' for the Factory timezone isn't valid for a TZ variable specification. I have discovered this because I have a tzfile parser in Perl that follows POSIX rules strictly for the TZ-format rule part, and I've started applying it systematically to the Olson database. This is the only zone that it has a problem with. The POSIX rules for TZ, as described in the Theory file and available online at <http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/basedefs/ xbd_chap08.html> among other places, prohibit spaces in the abbreviations. Factory's abbreviation is a sentence with words separated by spaces. I see it's grandfathered past zic's test for POSIX validity, but the intent behind that seems to be more about the length than about the spaces. I don't have a problem with the length: my code doesn't impose any fixed length limit. (POSIX allows implementations to limit the length to six bytes or higher, but doesn't oblige them to.) You could fix this by changing the spaces to dashes. The result is POSIX-valid, and also avoids violating the expectations of naive parsers of date(1) output that expect the timezone abbreviation to be just one word. The downside is that it slightly impairs readability to humans. POSIX systems are also still allowed to object to it if they do impose a small TZNAME_MAX. What are your thoughts? -zefram

Rules for Asia/Tokyo and Asia/Karachi

Hi, I am trying to understand the database file format and have a question regarding the rule definition of Asia/Tokyo and Asia/Karachi. Both time zones seem to be valid but I cannot see that from their definition in the database. java tz updates

Hi, Apologies if this is a bit off-topic as it's specific only to java timezones. The latest 2010k updates for java are not (yet) freely available from Sun. ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tzdata-versions-138805.html ) I have not looked into it, but I assume if I pay I could get the update. For Linux there there is a package "tzdata-java" which updates /usr/share/javazi/ but this does not used by the Sun JDK. Anyone know is an alternative to updating the Sun JDK timezones? I can of course program something - cases like Egypt changing time for Ramadan are fairly rare. Thanks Al
