If you are interested then take a look at www.timemap.f2s.com, the site is still under construction but it has a few screenshots and descriptions of the program. The program itself is still in the beta stage, however this should change hopefully in the next week or so. If you are interested in beta testing, please give me an email. I will allow for a few testers however I would expect useful comments and criticisms in exchange for the free software. Dear Friends, PLEASE! As a new member of this listing, I think it's a little bit hard to understand how to use the TZ database, I tried to read all files, but I don't get the right information. Somebody could tell me about: 1. Is there some readme files explaining how to use the tz code and database? 2. Is there some demo program or tutorial about TZ ? 3. Is there another sites about the TZ database? PLEASE! I really need to understand TZ. I know C language very well. I just couldn't figure out how to use TZ. Hey... I am working on a program that will display local times to locations right on a map. Anyway I have almost completed linking a database of 12000 locations with time offset and DST rule data. The only country left to do is Kazakhstan. The problem is that I don't know whether or not there are two or three time zones in Kazakhstan. The tz database states that there are three, but when I look at the latest CIA map (http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/reference/Low%20res%20PDF/low 802700.pdf) I only see one tz boarder crossing the country. If somebody could please tell me the actual number of time zones. If the number is indeed 3 time zones then I would really appreciate a map of some sort so that I could place my Kazakhstan cities into the correct tz according to their geographical position. Good Day! I wonder if it is possible to add a new city to your timezone database ? I do live in Tyumen/Russia and use BSD* unices for quite a long time. I often wondered why the heck should I use anonymous timezones like GMT+5, then stoped doing it. I even disagree about the assumption that yyyy-mm-dd is unambigous, because if the month number and the day-in-month number can be confused, they surely will according to Murphy's law, e.g. some people will create yyyy-dd-mm dates just as surely as they will create mm-dd-yyyy dates. I have always liked another standard, the yyyy-mmm-dd standard, because no matter how you interchange the elements, they are always unambigous, e.g. 08-OCT-2000, AUG-10-2000 or even 2000-01-JAN can't be misinterpreted simply because each element has different length. Unfortunately this standard has not gained much recognition, perhaps because it assumes english as the base language for the acronyms (JAN, FEB, MAR ...). That humanity has still not come up with a completely unambigous date format which is generally accepted, really shows how much IT is still in it's infancy. From a technical point of view it is a trivial problem, but of course it should be human-readable. Another similar problem is the myriad of ambigous ways that we identify a computer user, without really getting certain WHO it is. I am talking about those 40+ different account names with corresponding password I'm keeping in a password keeper program, about all the different finger print, eye scanner systems etc. that have been developed isolated, still without reaching a simple way to identify a computer user. Maybe in 20 years I will laugh of this mail because the solution has been implemented everywhere, but at the moment I think it is a big problem that is the real reason why e-commerce is still not raving off with millions of computer based transacions. Who are you giving credit? The 5-year old son of a well-known user? You'll have to guess. Meanwhile, why yyyy-mmm-dd or some other completely unambigous date format could not become international standard is beyond me. We *could* begin by defining an unambigous standard for the tzdata list though. I realize of course that isolated seen tzdata is already unambigous because it is already stated *somewhere* which standard has been used. My apologies for drifting a bit away from the original issue. Last Friday Sun made the source code for Star Office available from http://www.openoffice.org. What has this got to do with the timezone list you might ask. Well, one of the projects is to produce an XML based file format for use by Open Office (http://xml.openoffice.org) The Related Documentation section of the draft spec (http://xml.openoffice.org/xml_spec_draft.pdf) gives a URL for ISO 8601: http://www.iso.ch/markete/8601.pdf. Sure enough, the PDF file is there, available for anyone to download for free. (I hadn't seen this mentioned here before, but a quick check of Markus Kuhn's date and time page at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/iso-time.html shows that he has a link to this PDF file so he has obviously already spotted this.) It uses heuristics, so it won't always give you the right results in theory, though in practice it's pretty reliable. E.g. it does the right thing for TZ=Asia/Tehran because it knows about the Persian calendar. This function should give you the raw material to write the program that you want, without too much trouble. And the source code is freely available under the GPL, so if you prefer using some system other than GNU Emacs Lisp you can translate it.

Question on TZ data

Hi, thank you for your reponse. I have downloaded the TZ files and compiled them. From here I really don't know how to read the timezone data files. I would like to build a database of all of the timezones recognized in the world. My question is can these data files be dumped into a readable format that shows the finalized up to date rules for a timezone such as it's offset from GMT and the beginning and end of when summer time or daylight savings begins and ends? tzcode2000g, gccdiffs is obsolete

tzcode2000g contains a file "gccdiffs" with patches against an antique version of GCC (2.7.2.1) to check strftime formats against those accepted by an antique version of glibc (1.09.1). This file is completely obsolete; GCC 2.95.2 (the current release) will check strftime formats, and the format checking in GCC CVS (3.0-to-be) has been largely rewritten to check properly C89, C99, X/Open and glibc 2.2 formats (printf, scanf and strftime). -- Joseph S. Allow me to give a couple of key sources for Zeller's algorithm to find the day of the week: nr = (k + floor((13*m-1)/5) + D + floor(D/4) + floor(C/4) - 2*C) mod 7 k: day of the month. m: month number shifted by -2; March = 1, April = 2, January = 11 of year-1, February = 12 of year-1. D: year mod 100, or the last two digits of the year. C: year div 100, or the century; at the moment C = 20. nr is an integer from 0 to 6. 0 corresponds to Sunday, 1 to Monday etcetera. The new correct time savings for this year are - begin 08 Oct 2000 00:00:00 - end 18 Feb 2001 00:00:00 Unfortunaly, it is not clear if the 2nd weekend of September will be the official beginning for consequent years. The same applies for the end date. Therefore, I would advise maintaining the actual policy, yet adding this year's information.
