Question about 'tzparse()'

Mr. Olson, I'm wondering about line 920 in 'tzparse()' in 'localtime.c': 917 load_result = tzload(TZDEFRULES, sp, FALSE); 918 if (load_result != 0) 919 sp->leapcnt = 0; /* so, we're off a little */ 920 sp->timecnt = 0; 921 if (*name != '\0') { 922 if (*name == '<') { 923 dstname = ++name; It appears to have the effect of inhibiting the application of DST per '/usr/local/etc/timezone/posixrules' when a TZ string such as TZ="EST+5EDT" is used. If the line is removed DST is applied. The effective default if 'posixrules' is not readable, per TZDEFRULESTRING, is TZ="EST+5EDT,M4.1.0,M10.5.0" which does lead to the application of DST. Also RHEL 4.3 (CentOS 4.3) appears to apply DST when TZ="EST+5EDT". Does 'tzparse()' behave in this manner by design? Thank you for your efforts and contribution of the excellent. zone package. This code executes some invalid negative-offset array dereferences when the number of points in the array is too small. RHEL4.3 (CentOS 4.3) has zone files with fewer than 800 years in them and provokes this. I believe the attached patch corrects the problem. I am not sure if this helps the decision making process but here are the population numbers according to the 2001 Canadian census: Coral Harbour: 712 Atikokan: 3632 These numbers don't include the black flies or mosquitoes! The existing America/Coral_Harbour time zone encompasses all of Southampton Island (41214 square km) plus some small adjacent islands. Coral Harbour is the only settlement on Southampton Island; the adjacent islands are (to the best of my knowledge) uninhabited. The proposed America/Atikokan time zone would encompass the township of Atikokan (317 square km) and Quetico Provincial Park (4758 square km). Paul, Yes Atikokan could use America/Coral_Harbour. As you pointed out Atikokan and Coral Harbour are separate locations; they are in fact unrelated incontiguous areas separated by 1110 miles. I will let you decide what is best! I don't mind which way we go with this as long as there is some sort of reference to Atikokan in the zonetab file. If you decide to share the zone, keep in mind that Atikokan has a much bigger population than Coral Harbour; I am not sure what the implications of this are. Inconsistent format of data files?

Hi, I'm working on compiling the time zone data into an XML file for easier handling in a program. I noticed some inconsistencies in the format of the files versus the description in zic.8.txt. For example, in the latest version in Africa on line 93 there is an extra tab at the beginning. Can anyone confirm if this? I've attached screenshots of what I am seeing. Thanks, Colin
