time zones

Dear sir I would be grateful for your assistance. I obtained your E Mail address from Paul Stewart's web page. I am working on earthquakes which are recorded on UT time tied in with Zone Time. My problem is that I need to get the "real time" of these events, the time that it takes from Greenwich to reach the longitude by the Earths rotation. I need to tie up time and longitude, the earthquakes are reported in position of longitude / latitude, but not as accurately as time. I also need the real time span between quakes. My ideal solution to this problem would be software that would take in a spreadsheet produced file ( I have thousands of quakes ) and analysing date, time and latitude / longitude produce exact "real time" / Earth rotation time. I write my own spreadsheet macro's (Aseasy As)and could construct one if I knew all the time / zone boundary parameters. From what I have surmised of the crazy Zone and different clock contortions this would be a big job. I do not write macro's for Excel or Lotus 123 but could work existing macro sheets if they were available. I hope you can help me as I cannot move forward till I have solved this problem. Using yearistype requires "." in $PATH

The way zic is built, it assumes by default (no -y arg) that "yearistype" is somewhere in your path. However (and especially as it is distributed with the data files these days) yearistype is usually going to be found in "." which is generally not in anyone's path (and should never be in root's path). The NetBSD workaround (in its distributed tzcode) is to run zic as: zic -y "sh yearistype.sh" and not bother with making "yearistype", including making it executable, at all. The tzcode Makefile uses "-y ./yearistype". Those are OK for a makefile, but not really ideal for one off running zic by hand. As things are currently, the -y option is almost mandatory, zic just doesn't work properly without it, yet it is still optional in zic. Since it isn't included with tzcode the standard Makefile doesn't install it anywhere (but does depend upon it), it tends to just live with the data. Much better would be to actually look for, and find (when no -y is given) a suitable yearistype file - look in the directory where the data file is found (so "zic /usr/src/share/zoneinfo/australasia" would work), and if not found there, look in "." to see if it is there, and if not there, just assume it must be in PATH (and so leave it as just "yearistype") or can't be found at all. For now, that's more effort than is needed (for me). The searching should include looking for "yearistype.sh" as well most likely, and if that's found, and no yearistype is found, then run it as "sh ..." so it doesn't need 'x' permission). kre

The files ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/tzcode2000e.tar.gz and ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/tzdata2000e.tar.gz are now available. These include the data changes circulated on the time zone mailing list last week by Paul Eggert, a change to the default value of the defined constant HAVE_STRERROR, and the addition of a Dave Barry quote on DST to the tz-arts file. --ado

data file recommendation

I recommend adding the date of the change to the data files. The africa data file for example only has the following at the top of the file: # @(#)africa 7.33 The other data files also lack the date. I don't think that the file date in the tar files can be depended on to be the date of a change - I know for sure that some of the files in the March distribution have not been changed for a while.
