IDC<http://www.idc.com/> has published the “2014 Worldwide Software Developer and ICT-Skilled Worker Estimates<http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=244709>” document, a study estimating the number of professional software developers, hobbyist developers and Information and Communications Technology (ICT)-skilled workers in the world at the start of 2014. The 90 countries covered in the study represent 97% of the world’s GDP. According to Al Hilwa<http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=PRF003108>, Research Director at IDC and author of the above mentioned study, there are an estimated “29 million ICT-skilled workers in the world as we enter 2014, including 11 million professional developers.” Besides those, there are estimated to be another 7.5M hobbyist software developers around the globe, the actual numbers being depicted in the table below: [image]<http://cdn.infoq.com/statics_s1_20160105-0313u5/resource/news/2014/01/IDC-s…> The number of professional software developers by major economic regions is shown in the following chart: [image]<http://cdn.infoq.com/statics_s1_20160105-0313u5/resource/news/2014/01/IDC-s…> When it comes to countries, United States has the most software developers (professional + hobbyist) – 19.2%, followed by China with 10.1% and India with 9.8%. The document includes detailed statistics for all the countries covered by this study. Definitions used, according to the IDC study: Professional software developers are persons engaged in gainful employment where the primary activity is the construction of software or the direct supervision of such activity. Pro developers include the following workers, based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ classification: * Develop, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. * Analyze user needs and develop software solutions. * Design software or customize software for client use with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency. * May analyze and design databases within an application area, working individually or coordinating database development as part of a team. * May supervise computer programmers. Hobbyists are a new category of persons involved with software and tracked by IDC in their studies. According to this document, Hobbyist software developers range from persons engaged in software development to a much more limited degree so that it cannot be fairly classified as their primary occupation, even if they have formal occupations in the labor force. Hobbyist developers may also be students, who form a large chunk of this population. Hobbyist developers may also be unemployed or otherwise outside a country's labor force. The ICT-skilled workers include the professional developers, a small number of hobbyist and ICT operations and management-skilled workers, the study defining the later as: Simplistically, everyone in the classic ICT occupation classifications and the expanded STEM classifications, who is involved in ICT but is not deemed a professional software developer as described above, was counted as an ICT operations and management skilled worker. The primary occupations contributing to this number are systems, database, and network managers. The relationship between professional software developers, hobbyist and ICT workers is shown in the next graphic: [IDC-overlap]<http://cdn.infoq.com/statics_s1_20160105-0313u5/resource/news/2014/01/IDC-s…> Regarding the methodology used to estimate the number of ITC-skilled workers worldwide, IDC has relied on workforce statistical data (Eurostat, , ILO, country statistical organizations such as the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, etc.) provided by 54 of the countries studied. For other countries, IDC used the analysis of “secondary and tertiary education enrollment and for tertiary education graduations in STEM<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STEM_fields>-related fields available from the OECD.” For a small fraction of the countries for which there was no direct statistical data available, IDC relied on “macroeconomic data on labor force population sizes, GDP, education levels, human development indices, and IDC software spend data sets such as available from IDC's Software Tracker.” To answer the question in the title, currently there are an estimated 11,005,000 professional software developers, with 554,483 (5.3%) more than in 2011, and some 7.5M additional hobbyist, a community which has not been estimated by IDC before.

Dear all… I hope that everyone has had a good break and are keen to see (and help) some progress happen with regard to Universal Acceptance in this new year. There is a UA Coordination Group meeting at the end of next week. Details and a draft agenda have already been sent out. I’ll send out a revised agenda early next week and we’ll try to stick to times so people can link in when a topic of interest to them arises, but please bear with us if reality interferes and we finish a topic early (or late). ICANN has asked for an indicative budget and action plan for the FY16/17 year. Please find attache a draft document toward that end. Your comments on activities and numbers would be appreciated. If there’s something there you think we shouldn’t do, speak up. if there’s something missing, keen to hear that too. If you think the dollars allocated are unrealistic, provide suggestion for improving this please. Thank you for your participation, either active or passive. I look forward to a fulfilling 2016. Don

I would welcome people’s suggestions for which of these should be tested - as there’s a cost associated with testing each one. As we move forward on the completion of our documentation, we’re looking for some community CIO’s to provide guidance about what should be in and what shouldn’t be in a CIO Guidebook. Our plan is to have a focus group of people that we know very well and who understand the issue but have the role of CIO or senior IT staff and can look at the documentation from that perspective. And after that, we will have a focus group of CIO’s from outside the industry who will be able to critique the result. So, if you’re a CIO, or know a CIO, and would be willing to read the existing documentation and provide feedback, would you please let me know. We’d like to try to do this through e-mail but we can organise a call if that will be useful. Thanks. Don

We’ve had the following request from Lars Steffen from eco: "I am contacting you because Jean-Jacques and I are exchanging thoughts on joint activities of ICANN and eco in 2016. One of the events we are discussing about is the Customer Summit of the Certified Senders Alliance (https://certified-senders.eu/) I am responsible for the Names & Numbers Forum working group at eco (https://numbers.eco.de/international.html) lead by Thomas Rickert. The Certified Senders Alliance is a joint project by eco – association of the Internet industry (https://international.eco.de<https://international.eco.de/>) and German Dialogue Marketing Association (DDV, https://www.ddv.de<https://www.ddv.de/>). The summit addresses the technical email community at E-Mail Service Providers and Internet Service Providers. Attached to this email you find a briefing paper for the event. From my point of view it is a perfect target audience to address Universal Acceptance. Jean-Jacques and me already discussed in general that it would make sense that ICANN appears on the agenda for a presentation or – if it may make sense – a workshop. With an “powered by ICANN” contribution we could give that topic the value we think it deserves. The Summit will take place 21 April 2016 (main event) in Cologne. The whole event will be held in English. Why I am contacting you right now is that Jean-Jacques and I were thinking about who may be the right person for giving a presentation / workshop on UA to mainly email administrators. To make it valuable, a deeper knowledge in technical layers is needed. When it comes to the UASG there are of course several persons who would be a perfect match. But maybe you have additional ideas who would be a good choice, maybe also based in Europe. I would appreciate your feedback on this and say “thank you” in advance for your efforts.” We’re looking for volunteers who might be able/willing to participate. Don
