Hello, UA Colleagues: I want to be sure this group sees the call for participation for the Internationalisation and Unicode Conference, which takes place this October 14-16, 2020, in Santa Clara, California, USA. Do you want to propose a talk? If so, the deadline is this Friday, March 6, in the UTC-8 timezone. Many of you know the Internationalisation and Unicode Conference. For those who don't, it is a gathering of those who define The Unicode Standard for text, as well as architects of fonts, text rendering, and beyond that into software engineering aspects of internationalisation and localisation. About 100% of the audience are solidly in favour of the values and goals of Universal Acceptance. However, much fewer than 100% know what the Universal Acceptance Group does, and what the current successes and obstacles are. I think Universal Acceptance should not be absent from this conference. If anyone has questions about this conference, I have been attending for many years, and I would be happy to answer them. Others on this list are probably even more expert than I am. A nice way to end a fairly productive year. Plans coming up: There will be a Universal Acceptance gathering on Monday the 8th of January in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong IT Community. This is being organised by .asia, ISOC HK and UASG. If you’ve not yet received an invitation but will be in Hong Kong that afternoon, please let me know and we’ll organise one. 15:00 - 18:00 at the Sheraton. The UASG Coordination Group will be meeting on Tuesday the 9th of January and the morning of the 10th if necessary, also in Hong Kong. The agenda will be out next week. Full remote participation will be available if there’s interest. There will be a meeting of EAI operators on the 11th and 12th in Guangzhou, China, hosted by Coremail and CNNIC. If you are an EAI practitioner and would like to participate and have not otherwise registered, please let me know. I expect that we’ll have remote participation facilities. The UASG is expecting another UA Workshop on Day 0 of the ICANN meeting in Puerto Rico as well as a public update session during the week. Dates and venues still to be confirmed. Refocusing my priorities

Dear Sarmad - and all, I am rethinking my participation to groups, committees, and other activities. My contribution so far to UA has been negligible, mostly because of my lack of knowledge of all the technical aspects, but also because my interest in time has shifted from the UA in the strict sense to a wider area, namely how Internet users at large do not have the same opportunities to connect online. This includes from the physical connection to availability of local content, from the cost of the connection to the language barriers, and more. UA is surely an important factor in allowing worldwide users to get online, but the DNS is not the only one. I will unsubscribe from the UA subgroups, remaining only on this general UA list, in order to remain informed of the progress in this area. Cheers, Roberto

Congratulations to Abdalmonem Galila

Hello Hope you all are taking care in this pandemic situation and keeping safe. In these difficult time, we have some good news too. It is my pleasure to share that Abdalmonem Galila, UA Ambassador for UASG, has been selected as the first recipient of Tarek Kamel Fellowship Recognition, as announced in an ICANN blog on 11 June 2020. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of fellows in furthering ICANN's capacity development efforts in their respective regions. Abdalmonem Galila is the Deputy Manager of the .masr (.مصر) IDN ccTLD of Egypt. He is also a member of the Task Force on Arabic Script Internationalized Domain Names (TF-AIDN) that focuses on the secure deployment and ease of use of Arabic IDNs. He is a very active member of the ICANN community, and is currently engaged in the work being done by the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG). In March 2018, he was elected as a UA ambassador, supporting the equal treatment of all domain names. Since then he has conducted many UA awareness sessions, training sessions and hands-on workshops inside and outside of Egypt. Please join us in congratulating him on the recognition. Yes, you are right, it is the same problem except that with Unicode it is hugely more complicated. One could, for instance, state �� A well formed EA consists of ascii characters but not any ascii characters �� A well formed EAI consists of unicode characters but not any unicode characters So, for example: I doubt there is any email system that would allow me to register an EA with a space in the mailbox name eg "andre schappo(a)wherever.com" With an EAI such as "��ɥ졡��å�@�ǩ`��`��.��" it is more complicated because there are several different space characters eg en space, em space, figure space, ideographic space ...etc...
