One of the projects in this year’s plan is to produce an automated tool to evaluate an application’s UA Readiness. Below, with permission, is a proposal that Zensar, an outsourcing application developer and management organisation, is building to evaluate client side web applications. Zensar is doing this of their own accord, but it is nice to see that they are making use of UASG material. If you’ve any comments I’d be happy to forward them. Please note that this does not address the server side issues. A similar scanning tool might be able to be developed for a variety of languages on the server side too. That is a bit in the future. Zensar expects to make this tool available publicly and it’s expected to be available by the ICANN Meeting in India in early November. Open Source Programming Language Review and Mitigation Work

Our project to identify, review and mitigate major programming language libraries/frameworks for UA Readiness is about to kick off. We’ll start with a review of evaluation criteria and then we’ll set off four parallel streams of review and mitigation work. At each point, we’ll gather to discuss findings along the way and adjust our course accordingly. Rather than clog the UA-Discuss list with these conversations, we’ve creating a UA Working Group mailing list ua-wg1(a)icann.org If you have an interest in this topic and would like to subscribe to this list, please let me know and I can add you. Community Outreach Project Group co-convenor

Dear all: We recently received notice from Rich Merdinger that he would like to withdraw from the co-convener role of the Community Outreach group but will retain his other role as Vice-Chair of the UASG. Rich takes pain to note that he is not reducing his overall commitment to the UASG. He is seeking to broaden the participation in the UA Coordination Group. We are now looking for a replacement co-convener (Christian Dawson is the other co-convener) for the Community Outreach Project group of the UASG. The Community Outreach project group is one of two project groups within the UASG (the other is EAI). >From the UASG Charter: Each Project Group will be led by one to two Coordinators, an appointed role by the Steering Group Chair without specific term. Each group will develop budgets (resource, staffing and money) necessary to complete specific projects and develop sourcing strategies. … Project Group leaders should submit a Statement of Interest that is publicly accessible, and lists their affiliations and interests. Project Groups can spawn additional smaller working parties…. During a discussion today on creating a UA Issues Logging system, one of the question that came up was the scale of the problem. We know for certain that UA Failure occurs. Our testing shows that in the edge case of unicode(a)idn.idn <mailto:unicode@idn.idn> email addresses works less than 5% of the time. At the other end of the scale, an ascii(a)2nd.new4characterTLD works more than 90% of the time. Toward addressing this issue, I would appreciate it if Registrars, ISPs & Hosting Providers - who are most likely to have direct engagement with registrants - could provide me - off list - some indication of their view of the scale of the problem based on evidence from your Help Desk system. Basis for a UA Logging Project

Hello All, I apologize for my silence as of late, but I wanted to provide the UA list a basis for why I advocated in support of a UA Logging Project. Over the last 15 years I have been working with UA issues in connection with various registry clients. Over the last several months I have dealt with a number of UA issues with a variety of companies, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Adobe, and local ISPs. While I believe many of these examples justify the potential development of a UA Logging Project, I would like to share the details of a recent success story to highlight my support for this initiative. A registrant in a new gTLD which had recently migrated from their .COM to their new TLD extension was informed by one of their third party vendors that their extension was not working with Adobe's Connect Event Manager. This third party vendor on behalf of the registrant contacted Adobe which generated a support ticket and a bug tracking reference ID. The specific UA issue was associated with the use of Commons Validator API 1.4.1. After some period of time with no proposed resolution, I on behalf of the Registry Operator reached out to J Scott Evans who is an Adobe employee active in the ICANN community. J Scott was then able to track down an appropriate person within Adobe to help expedite resolution of the problem. Within days of getting to the right person, Adobe was able to resolve the issue by incorporating Commons Validator API 1.5.1 into the next release of the Adobe software scheduled for later this month. Now in dealing with Adobe and other software/service companies there are common practices that most follow in documenting UA issues, i.e. detailed instructions on what the user was doing when encountering the UA issue; screen shots of the error; OS/hardware; etc. I have found that the more detail you provide these companies the quicker they are about to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. By having a UA logging system it would allow UA WG or ICANN the ability to contact appropriate individuals in each company more quickly. I do NOT propose to make this contact information publicly available in any UA Logging system unless the person consents. I think by identifying the Commons Validator issue it could provide a means to alert other software providers of this issue to proactive address it before other new gTLD registrants experience this problem.
