Universal Acceptance (UA) is the concept of removing all technical barriers that might hinder a user from accessing any name in any top-level domain (TLD) from any web browser, email client, or other Internet application on any computer or electronic device. The report, sponsored by ICANN, is available here <http://www.potaroo.net/reports/Universal-Acceptance/UA-Report.pdf> [PDF, 1.63 MB]. APNIC Labs, the research arm of the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) <https://www.apnic.net/>, conducted the tests and analysis, which included measuring overall and per-country acceptance of certain generic top-level domains (gTLDs) by end-users and the domain name system (DNS) as a whole. The tests show that there were no underlying infrastructure obstacles to the accessibility of any TLDs. "These results were in-line with our expectations," said ICANN's Chief Technology Officer, David Conrad. "However, there will need to be changes to systems and software to fully leverage the global opportunities these new TLDs enable." Conrad went on to note that the results of the APNIC Labs tests identified occasional problems with Adobe's Flash product working in Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox when accessing Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) TLDs. UASG Chair Ram Mohan said "The problems identified in the report resulted in a larger than expected number of IDN TLDs being unresolvable, clearly an issue for Universal Acceptance. The UASG is reaching out to Microsoft, Mozilla and Adobe to further investigate and mitigate this issue identified in the report, and ensure problems are resolved for all TLDs." UASG Budget approved, Mark Svancarek becomes M&M area lead, F2F meeting in Philadelphia, things are moving!

Team, Over the past few months, one of the big tasks that I worked on with the UA Coordination team was the inaugural UASG budget. I’m pleased to inform you that our request for approximately $775,000 for the July 2015-June 2016 has been approved. In summary: Documentation workstream $95,000 Technical workstream $100,000 Awareness workstream $53,500 EAI workstream $55,000 Measurement & Monitoring workstream $226,250 UASG Meetings & Administration $245,000 *Total* *$774,750* *Mark Svancarek* has agreed to take on the lead role for the Measurements and Monitoring work stream. Mark has worked at Microsoft since 1993 and has held various roles in hardware, software and online services throughout the company. He holds eight U.S. patents. He is presently a Principal Program Manager for corporate IPv6 and Universal Acceptance Engineering efforts, and focuses on aspects which impact customer and partner satisfaction. The UASG Coordination group, which consists of leads for the workstreams above, will meet face to face at Afilias’ offices in Philadelphia on Sep 17 and 18 to progress work and retain momentum. We will publish detailed notes, and specifics on the projects at the meeting. We are working on a conference bridge and Adobe for next week’s meeting – details from *Don Hollander*.
