The move is also viewed as an attempt to distance the language from Russian and promote nationalism. Kasachstan | Kasachstan wechselt zum lateinischen Alphabet (REUTERS/illustration/S. Zhumatov) Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev on Friday announced the country's alphabet will gradually switch from Cyrillic to Latin script. Kazakh, a Turkic language, currently uses a modified Cyrillic alphabet with 42 letters. The Latin alphabet will have 32 letters. Certain sounds will be covered by the use of apostrophes. The change over is scheduled to be fully implemented by 2025. Officials said the switch is part of a modernization drive and an attempt to make use of technology easier. The Kazakh Cyrillic keyboard, for example, uses all number and punctuation keys in order to cover the 42 letters of Cyrillic alphabet. The Foreign Ministry said in September that the switch to Latin script would also benefit Kazakhstan's development. "[Latin] is used by approximately 70 percent of all countries, making it an essential part of communicating across the globe, especially in terms of technology, business, science and education," the ministry said. The oil-rich republic is a close ally of Russia and has the largest ethnic-Russian population of the former Soviet republics in Central Asia. Russian will remain an official language. Modernization and nationalism Nursultan Nazarbayev (picture-alliance/Pacific Press/J. Ratz) Nazarbayev himself uses both Russian and Kazakh in speeches. The switch is also seen as an attempt by Kazakhstan to distance itself from Russian influence and promote nationalism. According to the 2009 census, only 62 percent of the population is fluent in written and spoken Kazakh. Some 85 percent of the population is fluent in Russian. Kazakh briefly used the Latin script before switching to Cyrillic in 1940. Prior to 1929, the Arabic script had been used. The Soviet-era change to Cyrillic was implemented in other Turkic speaking Central Asian states and Azerbaijan in part to distance the countries from Turkey, which changed from a Persian-Arabic script to Latin in 1928 as part of a Westernization drive. Similarly, the switch from Arabic script to Cyrillic was designed to distance the Muslim Central Asian nations from the Islamic world. In an article published in state media in April, Nazarbayev described the use of the Cyrillic script as "political." ICANN delays posting the monthly registry reportsfor a period of three months. In this article I will be listing real functioning internationalised (i15d) email addresses. Currently I have listed 2 such addresses. So, what I am after is more examples of real functioning i15d email addresses. Do you know of any? I am after emails for my article that are:- 1️⃣ Public domain emails - can you please provide a link to the email, say a webpage showing the link, or say a tweet announcing the email publicly or a blog article announcing the email 2️⃣ A personal i15d email address that you would like to be known publicly. There may be a human interest story behind your email. My reasoning here is that if there is a human interest story attached to an i15d email then people are more likely to take note, and and remember it. See my blog article for an example. If you would like to share that story on my article please give me some text along with the email. Please keep the story brief or give me a link to your i15d email human interest story. I will in due course be making the email addresses in my article clickable. presentation of links to users - my current working practice

Here is my, since this morning, current practice for presentation of links to users. Most of the following I have been doing for some time but I have not been consistent. I will endeavour to be more consistent but sometimes I will forget to do it. Here are my current personal rules for presenting links to users http(s) will be presented without the scheme name nor www (there are a small number of websites that have been setup with only the www prefixed form). I will also, as has been my practice for years, show the real address eg uasg.tech<https://uasg.tech> If it is a really long address which I cannot reasonably fit on say, a presentation slide, I will use ellipsis to indicate there is more eg once.upon/a/time/there/was/a/beautiful/princess/that/…<http://once.upon/a/time/there/was/a/beautiful/princess/that/lived/in/an/anc…> One thing I will definitely not do is have anything like — " … click here<http://WeAreGoingToStealAllYourMoney.mafia> for more information. " email addresses I will of course linkify. That has been common practice in many apps for many years and common practice not to present to the user the scheme name mailto: . It is though still a bit difficult to get apps to auto linkify idn email addresses. But one can do it manually quite easily, well sometimes. Very easy with DataMail 邮.电邮.在线<http://xn--ue4a.xn--wny099c.xn--3ds443g> Other schemes I will present to the user with the scheme name to distinguish them from email and website links eg sftp://store.in.the.street/mine/file.txt I have given my email sig a makeover to conform with this working practice. If you have time can you please test the email link in my email sig below. I do not know what different mail clients will do with it. I hope that when you click the email link you will see in the email message To: field = my chinese email address 小山(a)xn--wny099c.xn--3ds443g and in the From: field - 你好小山😜 in your email client/App/webmail. That is what I see and that is what I set it up to do. Anyone from Apple on this list? There is an issue with OSX High Sierra Mail App. When I add an email link I have to specify "mailto://" rather than "mailto:". That in itself is not the issue but rather it is that Mail then treats the "//" as part of the email address and puts it into the email message To; field. I got round it by editing my mailsignature file and removed the "//". An easy fix would be to allow both "mailto://" and "mailto:" when adding links. Any chance of flagging this problem with the OSX Mail team? Can you please send us a scan of the back of your visiting card. Actually I did look at QR codes some 10+ years ago. My purpose was to get QR codes to work with IDNs. This was in the days when it was idn.ascii-tld and there was no such thing EAI. From what I remember I did get it working with IDNs. The technology will have moved on since I last looked at it but I see absolutely no reason why QR codes should not work with internationalised email addresses. I have not looked at QR codes since my investigation 10+ years ago, but will do so later. There is an issue with OSX High Sierra Mail App. When I add an email link I have to specify "mailto://" rather than "mailto:". That in itself is not the issue but rather it is that Mail then treats the "//" as part of the email address and puts it into the email message To; field. I got round it by editing my mailsignature file and removed the "//". An easy fix would be to allow both "mailto://" and "mailto:" when adding links. Any chance of flagging this problem with the OSX Mail team? It is important that everyone be familiar with both the taxonomy and the recommendations in advance of the meetings! It is okay to debate good practice recommendations or propose changes to taxonomy at the meetings –I encourage and expect debate - but if one does not have familiarity and grounding in what has gone before, we will waste time. Action items: 1. Review these documents again and make sure you are familiar with their details. 2. Share these documents with your contacts who will be attending the meetings who aren’t already members of the discussion group, because they probably won’t have seen these documents before. i18n workshop to school students

In a couple of weeks time I will be giving a participatory i18n workshop to school students. I did a similar workshop last year and one of the topics I covered then was IDNs. This year it will be IDNs + EAI. I will, of course, be taking the students to uasg.tech<http://uasg.tech> and डाटामेल.भारत<http://xn--c2bd4bq1db8d.xn--h2brj9c> 😀 I do not, as yet, know how many students will be attending my workshop. Last year there only about 10, aged around 15/16. I wrote a brief description of my workshop this morning, in preparation for my workshop. -start workshop description- 🌍 We are a long way from a fully internationalised internet, but everyone, no matter their skills or knowledge, can play a part in this grand endeavour. You too can play an important part in this exciting technological and cultural adventure. Activities in this participatory workshop will include: looking at what global companies such as McDonald's are doing, looking at techniques and technologies for internationalisation (i18n) and together we will do some programming. Do you know that it is now possible, for example, to have a Chinese email address? Currently, not many people have such an email but I do and mine is 小山(a)xn--wny099c.xn--3ds443g I will show how you can get your own free email address in languages, such as, Hindi, Russian and Chinese. 🌏 -end workshop description- One of the programming tasks will involve looking at what can happen if one does not understand Unicode. The happen in this case, is unexpectedly ending up with my given name with 2 acute accents, one stacked on top of the other, when doing a replace operation in javascript. I will explain about composed and decomposed text and then I will get the students to fix the problem by normalizing the text. André Schappo
