Email validation is an area where many websites fall short as we found in our study on Website UA Readiness (nearing publication) The technologies behind these websites generally use a Regular Expression as their first line of defence against rubbish data. The issue is that most of these RegExs are overly restrictive. As an appendix to the Website review, we looked at some of the technologies behind the websites to see if there were common denominators for good and bad experiences. One RegEx has stood out as being simple and correct. I’d like the UASG to consider recommending this in our documentation. Toward that end, this thread is for discussion. /^.+@(?:[^.]+\.)+(?:[^.]{2,})$ Regular expression check in Javascript. This accepts any Unicode characters, only insisting that the domain must have more than one label and the TLD is 2 characters or longer. Your thoughts? Don, my feedback: Universal Acceptance of Popular Websites: 1. In Appendix A (Discussion of Ideographic Full Stop), instead of giving ambiguous guidance (i.e. “the latest standards guidance is not crystal clear”) could we assert what the UASG recommends? For example: keep bullets 2 and 3, and remove 1, 4 and 5. 5 is even outdated, so it should be removed anyways. Universal Acceptance Case Report: 1. Typo in incoming cases: “USAG.TECH” 2. The total count for Incoming Cases versus Case Resolutions, should the numbers match? I would think so. Same for Outbound cases Evaluation of Web Sites 1. Page 6, last sentence of Introduction says: the raw data is available here. However, there is no link. Quick Guide to Linkification 1. In Principles of Linkification, the Safe Practice Principle states that “Links should NOT be created from strings that are Highly Restrictive according to the Unicode Technical Standard #39”. This is an odd recommendation because it would render almost 99% of domain names invalid for linkification. If we want to refer to UTS39, we should say something like “URLs that meet the UTS39 Restriction Levels 1 through 4 (i.e. ASCII-Only, Single Script, Highly Restrictive, Moderately Restrictive) are generally safe for linkification. Regarding the email address report A couple suggestions. 1) There are some styling issues. For example the font size changes in the last 2 paragraphs of the intro. Also, the table in Evaluation should be consistent about top or bottom cell alignment. 2) The document should be spell and grammar checked. For example: “Three attempt to explicitlys match” 3) I am not so sure about this “nobody attempts IPv6 literals” 4) This seems an odd aside “though one messes it up by not allowing for the enclosing [].” 5) The section on global vs local sites doesn’t seem to make a useful point. It mentions 4 companies, the Times of India being the only “local” or regional one. The authors expectations about the 4 companies aren’t met despite where the applications were developed, or the author’s view of their being modern or “staid”. This doesn’t seem to fit the heading global vs local sites. Singling out these companies does not seem wise nor there is a value to the section. With such a large number of sites failing, why mention these? It might be better to mention that the 749 sites included sites developed in non-English speaking markets and/or with target audiences in those markets, so the need for education and attention to UA is global (and the education itself must be multilingual). 6) Having castigated developers for accepting recommendations of regular expressions that did not work well for UA, isn’t it ironic that we recommend isemail for its popularity while admitting we don’t know how well it works and haven’t evaluated it? 7) I don’t think we should offer the mitigation sections without more clarity on the correct solutions. We certainly should not have them under a section called key findings as they are not findings. 8) It would be good to offer a reference or some other support for the claim “Regular expressions cannot fully validate an email address.” (I am not disagreeing. However, the claim should be justified.) Hth tex

Regarding the media alert: a couple suggestions. The alert states that we have made significant progress (but we have work to do) twice (in the first 2 paragraphs in the WHAT section). However as these are the first studies, we have no basis for the claim that we have progressed significantly since 2010. Only 7% accepted non-English addresses which seems low to me. Perhaps we should be more objective in our analysis and simply state that these reports show we have more work to do in education and recommending solutions, to reach the next billion internet users. Also, the only example TLDs mentioned are the legacy domains. We should offer uasg.tech and others as examples longer than 3 letters. I understand in may be problematic to offer other languages in an alert. If we can’t directly reference examples of non-English domains in the alert, perhaps we can provide a link to a list of example domains. The first reference to top level domains should include “generic” to explain the gTLD that follows. Although 1500 TLDs is significantly more than the 7 or so we had years ago, if we had a measure of the number of sites under those domains or the activity going to those domains or a graph of the growth in activity to those domains, that might be more compelling as to the urgency of supporting them. If not numerical examples, perhaps reference a few of the domains enabling particular cultures to use the net that might not be able to in ascii… This might lead the media to some personal stories or use cases to go after… tex
