Meeting agenda for UA Internationalization, May 12 @ 13:00 UTC Conference bridge info: see attachment Agenda 1. Introductions and expectations from volunteers 2. Vision, mission and scope of this group a. Vision: An end-to-end multilingual Internet that users are able to access using their own script and everything just works. b. Mission: Increase awareness of the good practices and gaps of Universal Acceptance of IDNs by identifying, recording and sharing the information with the Internet community. At the same time, encourage the community to replicate good practices and address the gaps to advance the adoption of IDNs. c. Scope: The i18n Project Group will be focused on the IDN ecosystem (IDNA, EAI and IRI) as it pertains to these four major categories: i. Standards (i.e., IETF, Unicode, W3C) ii. Practices (i.e. guidelines established by others) iii. Tools (i.e., apis, programming languages) iv. Applications (e.g. browsers, email clients, other apps) d. Not in scope 3. Collaboration with other project groups: Priority Issues, Community Outreach, Monitor and Measurement. 4. High level roadmap a. Phase 1: Telling the good. In this phase the group should aim to deliver documentation of already implemented good practices of IDN-aware applications. Also, seek standardization of practices (such as internet browsers). b. Phase 2: Telling the bad. Identify the gaps and identify the potential owners to address the issues. Write recommendations for good practices. c. Phase 3: Building bridges. In this phase we encourage developers of all sizes to implement current standards and policies (EAI RFCs, IDNA2008, Unicode IDN guidelines, etc) 5. Action items: a. FYI: There was a gathering convened by THNIC in Bangkok last week to raise awareness of the .thai ccTLD and growing the Internet in the Thai language. You would have seen an invitation from THNIC last month. One of the important issues identified, from preliminary reports, is that it will be important to have underlying software available that can support the Thai language – particularly in e-mail. While testing continues, this does not appear to be widely available. Hello all, I'll be heading up the Universal Acceptance Top Issues subgroup. The purpose of this email is to (a) identify who will be participating in this subgroup, and (b) find time for a kickoff call. The "top issues" category is still a bit amorphous, and one of the goals over the next few weeks will be to define boundaries and structure. Some of the potential areas of focus that I've discussed with Don and Ram include: 1. Criteria for what "UA Ready" means 2. Assessment of current documentation and tools in this space 3. Creating a Knowledge Base and/or Wiki 4. A bit more news from the UASG world. Mark McFadden has agreed to be the Project Coordinator for the Measurement and Monitoring Project Group. There’s a UA Coordinators call coming up May 6 @ 23:00 UTC. The UA Coordinators call is open to all to observe. It’s a call for the Chair, Vice-Chairs and Project Group Coordinators to connect and coordinate. Attached to this note you’ll see the draft agenda, the draft notes from the previous call, a draft program for Buenos Aires and a draft generic UA Slide Deck..
