Hello all, I'll be heading up the Universal Acceptance Top Issues subgroup. The purpose of this email is to (a) identify who will be participating in this subgroup, and (b) find time for a kickoff call. The "top issues" category is still a bit amorphous, and one of the goals over the next few weeks will be to define boundaries and structure. Some of the potential areas of focus that I've discussed with Don and Ram include: 1. Criteria for what "UA Ready" means 2. Assessment of current documentation and tools in this space 3. Creating a Knowledge Base and/or Wiki 4. UA Community Outreach team, Rich Merdinger & Christian Dawson are heading up the Universal Acceptance Community Outreach subgroup. The purpose of this email is to: 1) identify who will be participating in this subgroup 2) find a time for a kickoff call The "Community Outreach" subgroup is extremely important, since we will be building the model to empower all our outreach efforts. We will be discussing how this group will work. The goal is to collaborate with the other UASG groups, taking materials from the Topline Issues and Internalization subgroups and meeting the requirements of the Metrics & Measurement subgroup. Agenda for a kickoff call is as follows: 1. Methodology for moving forward, and how we will collaborate 2. Who are the key influencers in which verticals that we need to address? 3. What are the venues we will need to enter into in order to achieve this? 4. Early budget points 5. Scope The i18n Project Group will be focused on the IDN ecosystem as it pertains to these four major categories: 1. Standards (i.e., IETF, Unicode, W3C) 2. Practices (i.e. guidelines established by others) 3. Tools (i.e., apis, programming languages) 4. It only seems like it’s been quiet… Here’s an update of some of what’s been happening in the UASG world: · Project Group Coordinators that have been confirmed so far… o Top Line Issues – Brent London o Community Outreach – Rich Merdinger and Christian Dawson o Internationalisation – Dusan Stojicevic and Dennis Tan o Measurement and Monitoring – still to be determined · A workshop proposal has been submitted to the IGF. This is co-sponsored by The DNA and the UASG · A workshop proposal has been submitted to the APRIGF (Asia Pacific Regional IGF) · The UA Wiki Page has been updated - https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=47255444 · There has been some discussion on the Community Outreach Project Group mailing list about things that the group can do. Please continue to make contribution there. · An outline for a quarterly newsletter has been established. We’re currently looking for a couple of case studies. Please let me know directly if you have some ideas. Now that three out of the four Project Groups have coordinators these groups will start work on clarifying the scope, coming up with ideas to do in the next twelve months, and starting to work. We’ve also booked space for a full-day workshop on the Sunday during the ICANN meeting in Buenos Aires. Please share what you would like in this workshop. Don

July OSCon in Portland - Getting UA in front of developers

One of the larger Open Source developer conferences is called OSCon in Portland, operated by O'Reilly (those books with the various black and white animal pictures on them). The event is July 20-24 in Portland Oregon. Here is the URL: http://www.oscon.com/open-source-2015/public/schedule/grid/public There are quite a number of infosec sessions if you need 'security and stability' justification for budget, but the focus of UA advancement might be helped by being in front of the people who are actually writing the code on the majority of the websites that Internet users are interacting with. In skimming the sessions, this one stood out to me: You type "google.com" into your browser bar and press enter: what happens next? http://www.oscon.com/open-source-2015/public/schedule/detail/41094 Seems to me like participation in events like this would have a large impact. The bad news about UA in the developer community is that there is very little awareness of new TLDs and IDN - the majority of the developers I speak with have little or no awareness of the new TLDs, IDN, or EAI issues. The silver lining to that, which I think is the good news, is that there's really not much that could be done to set UA backwards by participating and elevating awareness of new TLDs. Hi Everyone, These presentations were forwarded from a conference session in Dubai on 1-2 April 2015. One is a presentation from ICANN on the IDN program and the other is some research on the compatibility of Arabic IDNs with various Internet applications. They reinforce the need for more work on universal acceptance, especially the report by Raed Alfayez of SaudiNIC. While I can get a lot of the problem and specific work from the slides, do we think it'd be good to have Raed present this material (or are these results already well known)? Regards Kurt

RIGF, small report

Dear all, Last week, Russia held the sixth annual Internet Governance Forum (6. RIGF) in Moscow, a gathering of officials, business people, and other Web “stakeholders” to discuss Internet regulation. It was a very interesting and very good one-day event, held in Lotte Hotel on April 7, and You can check the agenda on www.rigf.ru. Small jokes in the names of the sessions were only the cover for very good and fruitful debates. I will save the best for last. J First session was revelation for me. Called „The Bottom Up and Upside Down“, this session was focused on Internet governance and the influence of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The participants included Oleg Demidov (Russia), Lucky Masilela (South Africa), Marília Maciel (Brazil), Parminderjeet Singh (India) and Liyun Han (China). At the same time, the session called „We Share the Same Technology (Regardless of Ideology)“ was about the issues of the Internet of Things (IoT). The panel participants included Jari Arkko (IETF), Paul Vixie (Farsight Security, Inc.), Kaveh Ranjbar (RIPE NCC), Pavel Khramtsov (Netoscope) and Andrey Yarnikh (Kaspersky Lab). I skiped this one, but it was very interesting. The panel titled „Your Call Is Very Important for Us“ focused on cooperation between the Internet business community and governments. Vartan Khachaturov, Alexander Shepilov, Michael Yakushev, Dmitry Marinichev, as well as Frederic Donck (Belgium) and Julien Nocetti (France) took part in the discussion. I skiped this one also, because I was participant at the same time on the IDN panel. This year, registries representatives of nearly all national Cyrillic domains attended the forum, and on the session „Expanding the Cyrillic Universe“ we covered problems and challenges in the Cyrillic zone – participants: Mikhail Anisimov (Russia), Iliya Bazlyankov (Bulgaria), Pavel Gusev (Kazakhstan), Saso Dimitrijoski (Macedonia), Yuri Kargapolov (Ukraine), Sergey Povalishev (Belarus) and me. Proposal for Universal Acceptance Session during the Asia Pacific Regional IGF - July 2015

Dear All: There is some interest in having a session during the APRIGF in Macao in July looking at Universal Acceptance Issues, particularly as they related to IDN TLDs. There have been similar workshops in the past and this looks to build on those. The expected output from the workshop is a matrix identifying who has done what and with what degree of success. This matrix can then be used in other communities as people advocate the UA platform. Apologies for this being so late, but we would like to solicit any comments that you might have on this proposal. Hi Don, Is there a short and memorable URL I can use to promote Universal Acceptance? I’m preparing my presentation for the next multilingual web workshop at Riga and will be touching on Universal Acceptance. I thought it would be a good opportunity to promote our efforts and rally people to get informed and hopefully involved too. I was thinking of a URL something like “icann.org/UniversalAcceptance” and use ICANN’s UA site as the landing page. Also, in the “Get Involve” link<https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/universal-acceptance-2012-02-25-en#in…> it would be useful to list all 4 or 5 links to join the mailing lists.
