article of a site owner's experience with gTLD (xyz)
Hi, Just bump into this article of a site owner's experience with gTLD (he uses .xyz) which I think many of you may find interesting. https://www.spotvirtual.com/blog/the-perils-of-an-xyz-domain/ Lots of what he experienced was discussed in the UA group already. And recently, I learned that someone tried to purchase a certificate of a domain where the TLD was delegated recently and the vendor can't sell as the TLD is not available. Best, Joseph
Interesting read, but in many respects this isn’t a UA issue at all but more a reputation one. They sum it up themselves: “Avoid at all costs (or savings) all domains which are priced incredulously cheap. The poisoning of the proverbial .xyz well was most likely caused by really cheap prices and promotions causing them to be chosen by spammers “ Regards Michele -- Mr Michele Neylon Blacknight Solutions Hosting, Colocation & Domains https://www.blacknight.com/ https://blacknight.blog/ Intl. +353 (0) 59 9183072 Direct Dial: +353 (0)59 9183090 Personal blog: https://michele.blog/ Some thoughts: https://ceo.hosting/ ------------------------------- Blacknight Internet Solutions Ltd, Unit 12A,Barrowside Business Park,Sleaty Road,Graiguecullen,Carlow,R93 X265,Ireland Company No.: 370845 From: UA-discuss <ua-discuss-bounces@icann.org> on behalf of Joseph Yee via UA-discuss <UA-discuss@icann.org> Date: Monday, 4 October 2021 at 20:18 To: ua-discuss <UA-discuss@icann.org> Subject: [UA-discuss] article of a site owner's experience with gTLD (xyz) [EXTERNAL EMAIL] Please use caution when opening attachments from unrecognised sources. I think we agreed a while ago that UA was about fixing technical barriers to adoption, not policy based blocks. While .xyz is the best known case, there have been lots of new TLDs that got only a trickle of sales, cut prices in a panic to get bulk registrations, and found that the only people who want bulk domains are crooks. Not our problem. It would be nice if ICANN stopped pretending the world wants or needs more TLDs and worked on improving the quality of the ones they already have, but that doesn't seem likely.
