EAI Addresses for Testing
Here are two addresses for testing. Please send some messages to these addresses, then share back the results. مارك@رسيل.السعودية<mailto:مارك@رسيل.السعودية> 微软测试@互联网.中国<mailto:微软测试@互联网.中国> Please tell us your configuration: · OS · Browser version (if you used a browser mail application) · Email application version(if you didn’t use a browser) Also send us the results. First issue is that OS X Apple Mail 8.2 thinks Mark's email is junk/spam. So check in your spam folders whilst these tests are being conducted. My experiences are that there is a tendency for spam filtering systems to tend towards intolerant for IDNs André Schappo On 6 Mar 2016, at 15:30, Mark Svancarek <marksv@microsoft.com<mailto:marksv@microsoft.com>> wrote: Here are two addresses for testing. With OS X Apple Mail 8.2 +MS Exchange, and for both the below emails I get the warning that the email does not appear to be a valid email address. Hi, I didn't expect this to work in my environment, but I thought I'd see what happens. This message may be a little geeky, so if you don't want all that detail you can ignore most of it. I'm running an old-timey mail user agent called mutt, on OS X 10.10.5. It runs in a terminal. The OS X terminal does support UTF-8. It's version 1.5.23 (which means I'm a minor revision behind. Oops). It's compiled with --with-idn, which is supposed to help with IDNA but doesn't do EAI. Mutt contains its own smtp client that allows me to submit directly to my mail server. At the moment my mailserver has EAI disabled (because my mail client will spit up, so it's better to reject the mail): So, this arrangement actually should just break. Now, here's what's fun: On Sun, Mar 06, 2016 at 03:30:48PM +0000, Mark Svancarek wrote:

In this case, I couldn't send mail at all, because I couldn't extract the address. It appears that the angle brackets from the mailto: URI turn this whole thing into a giant bidi problem which wreaks havoc on cut and paste. I'm not good enough with Arabic script to be able to enter the address correctly by hand. So this one fails at entry, and it's a human factors problem. It's worth noting that this is not actually a bug: it was part of the design of EAI. The idea was that, if you were going to internationalize email, you wouldn't give anyone an email address that he or she couldn't read or write. (Yes, I'm aware of the irony that much of the world already can't read or write old-fashioned email addresses. But we're supposed to be getting better, remember?) The idea is that people who email each other have some connection to one another (unlike the case with domain names).

I also experienced the cut and paste issue - during the demo, you may have noticed that I pasted the SaudiNIC address separately from the other addresses. Perhaps this explains one of the Coremail failures where the address seems to be inadvertently converted to a pair of invalid Chinese IDNs. /marksv -----Original Message----- From: ua-discuss-bounces@icann.org [mailto:ua-discuss-bounces@icann.org] On Behalf Of Andrew Sullivan Sent: Sunday, March 6, 2016 5:28 PM To: ua-discuss@icann.org Subject: Re: [UA-discuss] EAI Addresses for Testing Hi, I didn't expect this to work in my environment, but I thought I'd see what happens. I am going to offer a different possible explanation here: The U.S. Senate stated in its most recent letter to the ICANN Chairman that there was new evidence of systemic chinese government influence throughout ICANN. The Chinese characters are showing up in more and more email addresses each day and no one understands why. Think of this, if you wanted to make an advance play at controlling the internet of another country, how easy would it be to install a code into the internet that slowly changes all characters on all internets you dont control to your languages characters. Since only a percentage of each population is multilingual, there would be lots of confusion, (not by mark zuckerberg though since he knows Mandarin). Business would have to effectively stop in the affected countries, until everyone either learned chinese or the virus was antedoted with a patch. Makes no sense to me why wolfgang for example had chinese characters in his email address over at the isoc internet policy elist discussion. I didnt think much of it until i saw these threads showing UA are confused as to why the chinese characters are appearing. Could the new evidence cited by the U.S. Senate regarding systemic chinese government influence throughout ICANN be that a code was installed to slowly turn the american based internet into all chinese characters? Ron
Ron - This is stupid, offensive and pointless. Please desist from sending messages like this to this mailing list as it simply wastes the bandwidth of all the rest of us and has no other effect or impact. List admins - I think Ron’s posts to this list have clearly and repeatedly exceeded the thresholds of acceptable behaviour and you should now revoke his posting rights. Jay

Ron, This is the sixteenth time that you have chosen to post to the UA list on topics that are not relevant to our purpose or charter. I was wondering how Mark had got an Arabic email address and decided to find out. I discovered the Raseel project http://رسيل.السعودية/raseel-arabic-email-addresses<http://%D8%B1%D8%B3%D9%8A%D9%84.%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9/raseel-arabic-email-addresses> I gather from the site though that, unfortunately, they are not taking any more requests for Arabic email addresses on their system??? Apart from that the Raseel website is really good as, apart from the url above, the rest of the navigation urls are wholly in Arabic i.e. including the pathname part http://رسيل.
