My first reaction to your suggestion to involve registries was - hmmmmm not sure But, in actual fact, they could be invaluable in publicising the competition. and …. their could be some friendly rivalry between the registries with each registry encouraging people to enter into the competition using their new gtld …and …. the registry that has the new gtld of a winning entry could award an additional prize André Schappo On 18 Nov 2015, at 14:36, Ram Mohan wrote:
Andre, I like your idea and see no barrier to doing this. Perhaps even do this in collaboration with registries?

Here is an alternative to a Hackathon -
An open competition for ideas for 2 domain names for this group. An ascii new gtld domain name and an idn new gtld domain name. Entries will be judged on creativity, uniqueness, relevance …etc…
The 2 winning entries will be registered and used by this group. The 2 winning entrants will receive prizes
This seems to me to have a lot of potential because
① it will be totally open to absolutely everyone ② i consider this could take place over a long period of time ③ it will aid in promotion of UA ④ it could serve as a way into schools, colleges and universities ⑤ i think it less risky than a hackathon

A quick update on the idea of a Hackathon @ ICANN55
Ram, Dennis & I had a call with folks at ICANN about a Hackathon @ ICANN55.
We indicated that the UASG was not prepared to run a Hackathon there, but we would be happy to participate as one of the potential projects should ICANN want to pursue one.
We provided some indicative information on costs and approaches used by AngelHack for their consideration.
The ICANN folks are going to reconsider the idea with this information and will let us know if they decide to proceed.
