I don't mind it that much as there are other miscellaneous Unicode characters in the file, but the № character does look horribly condensed when rendered in a fixed width font (which is how the tzdata files are normally viewed). -- -=( Ian Abbott @ MEV Ltd. True. I mildly prefer "№" but it's not worth the aggravation to others so I changed it back to "No." in the experimental version (see attached patch). This isn't simply an undo: if we combine the last two patches (see the attached combined patch) some instances of "Number", "[Number]", "Nº", "no.", etc. have been changed to "No.", so the usage is more consistent now. I was particularly bugged by the "Nº", as the masculine ordinal indicator is a solecism here.

I don't see any solecism. The superscript o is not an ordinal indicator here. Nº is not a synonym for Nth. The words that are abbreviated Nº are masculine nouns: French numéro, Spanish número, Italian numero, etc. If they were adjectives, what would they modify? Words like Decree, Bill, Journal, Law, most of them masculine in French and Spanish. Gwillim Law

Perhaps I'm being pedantic, but I think º (U+00BA MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR) should be used only with ordinals. I know ordinal indicators are sometimes used elsewhere (e.g., "M.ª" for "Maria" in Portuguese, "Nº" for "Number" in English) but these should really be superscript letters and using ordinal indicators can lead to inconsistencies. For example, the Portuguese abbreviation for "Excelentíssimo" is "Ex." followed by superscript "mo" and no ordinal indicator looks like superscript "m" so people typically either use superscript "mo" or don't bother with superscripting and just write "Ex.mo", and this is inconsistent with using an ordinal indicator to abbreviate "Maria".

I don't see any solecism. The superscript o is not an ordinal indicator here. Nº is not a synonym for Nth. The words that are abbreviated Nº are masculine nouns: French numéro, Spanish número, Italian numero, etc.
Perhaps I'm being pedantic, but I think º (U+00BA MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR) should be used only with
In French at least, the second character of N° is properly U+00B0 DEGREE SIGN.
In Spanish the the accepted abbreviations, according to Real Academia Española, are: n.º nro. núm # (see http://lema.rae.es/dpd/apendices/apendice2.html and http://lema.rae.es/dpd/apendices/apendice4.html) Although, Nº and No. are widely used. The superscript o stands for an "o" and U+00B0 ° DEGREE SIGN is nowhere close to being the correct representation for it (it's another matter whether that superscript o should look like a circle or not). As noted before, because it is easy to find "nos" (for the plural), the characters U+00BA º MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR and U+2116 № NUMERO SIGN are not very useful in modern representations of "no". Furthermore, if I am not mistaken, U+2116 № NUMERO SIGN was introduced in Unicode for compatibility with East Asian character sets, and probably would not have been encoded on its own merit. In modern text representations, markup is the only sane way to go. And in plain text, "no." and "nos." are probably the best approximations. Eric.

I just looked it up in the unicode docs: Numero Sign. U+2116 numero sign is provided both for Cyrillic use, where it looks like XXX [I was unable to get the character to appear here -- it looks like the first glyph in the attachment], and for compatibility with Asian standards, where it looks like XXX [the second glyph in the attachement]. Figure 15-2 illustrates a number of alternative glyphs for this sign. Instead of using a special symbol, French practice is to use an “N” or an “n”, according to context, followed by a superscript small letter “o” (No or no; plural Nos or nos). Legacy data encoded in ISO/IEC 8859-1 (Latin-1) or other 8-bit character sets may also have represented the numero sign by a sequence of “N” followed by the degree sign (U+00B0 degree sign). Implementations interworking with legacy data should be aware of such alternative representations for the numero sign when converting data.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to use an obscure Unicode character that a lot of people won’t be able to display. It’s one thing to use proper letters with diacriticals. But “No.” is perfectly clear. The proposed character is just a rather ugly ligature for that abbreviation.
I don't mind it that much as there are other miscellaneous Unicode characters in the file, but the № character does look horribly condensed when rendered in a fixed width font (which is how the tzdata files are normally viewed).

Thanks, this led me to look again and I found a few others as well. Should be fixed by the attached patch.
