tzdata comments link to an April Fools article
I was poking around and found the following in the "australiasia" file: # From Paul Eggert (2018-04-01): # The Guardian Express of Perth, Australia reported today that the # government decided to advance the clocks permanently on January 1, # 2019, from UT +08 to UT +09. The article noted that an exemption # would be made for people aged 61 and over, who "can apply in writing # to have the extra hour of sunshine removed from their area." See: # Daylight saving coming to WA in 2019. Guardian Express. 2018-04-01. # https://www.communitynews.com.au/guardian-express/news/exclusive-daylight-sa... However, this article is a joke (note that it is dated April 1 and says some rather silly things). Maybe everyone was in on the joke, but I very nearly wasn't. I think it would be best if this reference were removed or if not clearly marked as humor. In the unlikely event that this actually reflects reality, perhaps a different reference could be used. Please cc: me on replies. Jeff

I installed the attached to make it less likely for future readers to be fooled. I hope you don't mind leaving the joke in, as laughter is all too rare in this project.
That should help! I don't want to be humorless, just prevent anyone from accidentally using the article as a serious reference. Thank you Jeff On Tue, Jul 5, 2022 at 10:50 AM Paul Eggert <eggert@cs.ucla.edu> wrote:

I think you may need a more direct explanation, as I don't think "April Fool's Day" is necessarily known in all cultures. On Tue, Jul 5, 2022 at 8:51 AM Paul Eggert via tz <tz@iana.org> wrote:

I think that the context of April 1 is readily accessible to anyone who can read English and that the risk of damage here is small. -- Steve Allen <sla@ucolick.org> WGS-84 (GPS) UCO/Lick Observatory--ISB 260 Natural Sciences II, Room 165 Lat +36.99855 1156 High Street Voice: +1 831 459 3046 Lng -122.06015 Santa Cruz, CA 95064 https://www.ucolick.org/~sla/ Hgt +250 m

"can read English" is restrictive. Clarity is precious, and enigmatology is misplaced here. -- gil
When I read "The article noted that an exemption # would be made for people aged 61 and over, who "can apply in writing # to have the extra hour of sunshine removed from their area."" I was like who could think it was anything but a joke? Then I realised politicians might just be dumb enough to try and write that into a law. Some might be dumb enough, or deceitful enough, to propose such nonsense, but there's no chance that that kind of thing would survive any kind of review (even just by the bureaucrats who would need to actually implement it). When you see something like that claiming to have been implemented, you know (or should, unless you're a moron) that the whole thing is a joke, whether you understand the April fools' concept or not. kre
