The primary system without strerror, if my memory serves me correctly, is ULTRIX.
I think SunOS 4.x might also lack it (but I'm not sure where the only box I knew of here at NetApp still running 4.x disappeared to, so I can't easily check).
The SunOS 4.x box we have here does indeed lack strerror. --ado
