CNBC : What Happened to Skype ?
At its height, Skype – a telecommunications app founded by Scandinavian entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, and Estonian engineers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, Jaan Tallinn and Toivo Annus – had 560 million registered users. In 2005, just two years after its launch, the app was acquired by eBay. Later, a majority stake was sold to private equity firm Silver Lake. Microsoft then acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion. While it was revolutionary in its time, Skype’s journey has been full of ups and downs. Now that Microsoft has rival Teams, the future of Skype is uncertain. CNBC explores the company’s past, present and what’s next for the company. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc5MNTKLnns
..as the world turns eh. I still love the Skype sound but hardly use it now. Cannibalization of the user base by competing Teams by MS plus the tenuous link to complementary goods in the MS world is the writing on the wall. I've done more than a few Skype calls (voice primarily) recently to TT businesses who refuse to use WhatsApp or similar. Flawless and still quite inexpensive. On Mon, 3 Jul 2023, 7:08 pm Carlton Samuels via ttf, < ttf@atlarge-lists.icann.org> wrote:

Besides Skype, back in the day we had Viber, Tango, Kakao and Line, and others to choose from, but they all seem to be very localized/limited now. On Tue, Jul 4, 2023, 12:45 AM Carlton Samuels <carlton.samuels@gmail.com> wrote:

That is one component part. The other is that you can subscribe to cheap subcriptions to unlimited calls for geographic regions - that's calls to telephone numbers in any part of the world. In business, the telephone is still important and being able to place such calls from anywhere with an Internet is good. Agreed, roaming deals with mobile providers have eaten a bit of this, but recently mobile phone operators have actually tightened their roaming conditions, so Skype might still have some time to live. The other thing I was wondering about was a post from Dev in December about Skype Truevoice. https://www.skype.com/en/blogs/2022-12-skype-truvoice/ Has anyone actually used this? What is it like?
