LACRALO NEWSLETTER Volume 1 | September 2020 Information for our end user community Visit our website <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0011CwYbjwIliwOfIdJdv72WlgSHg3zhFaBJRk5KLP4yg-2C...> WORDS FROM THE CHAIR Sergio Salinas Porto, LACRALO Chair
Hello, friends, this is our first LACRALO newsletter dedicated to all Internet End Users in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
Those of us working in the Internet community with an end user perspective understand that it is very important to spread the word about everything we do within ICANN, as well as to give visibility to the different activities developed by our organizations in each of our countries.
LACRALO is the Internet end user space for discussion and advice on Internet policies within the scope of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), bringing LAC Internet end users´ view to the ICANN Board of Directors.
We invite you to join LACRALO from the organizations already operating in each of the countries of the region, or if you belong to an organization interested in Internet-related issues or in defending Internet users´rights or if you are an individual user, we encourage you to get involved, since you will also have a voice within LACRALO.
Warm greetings,
Sergio Salinas Porto LACRALO Chair WORDS FROM ICANN'S VICE-PRESIDENT FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, RODRIGO DE LA PARRA It is with great pleasure that I am writing these lines for the LACRALO Newsletter first edition. You should feel very proud of this achievement, including this newsletter, which will undoubtedly be a very important communication instrument both within and outside LACRALO to learn about the different activities that you carry out.
We would like to keep on working side by side to contribute to our organization´s Mission and to the Internet development in our region. We thank you very much for having contributed to our 2021-2025 Strategic Plan. I am confident that we will undertake many joint projects.

LACRALO has approved its new Rules of Procedures after approximately 3 years of work that began with the "LACRALO Roadmap and Mediation". The LACRALO Governance working group first drafted the Operating Principles passed in December 2018.
These "Rules of Procedures" extensively define the procedures to implement the new governance structure envisaged by the Operating Principles.
Both documents set forth a very sound basis for LACRALO to undertake its activities in a certain, transparent and fair manner.
Documents in EN and ES are published on this wiki page <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0011CwYbjwIliwOfIdJdv72WlgSHg3zhFaBJRk5KLP4yg-2C...> . IDN REGISTRATION IN THE LAC REGION The LACRALO IDN -Multilingualism - Universal Acceptance WG began to work in June 2019 and has members from more than 12 Latin American countries. The WG did an important work on IDN registration in the LAC region.
Additionally, the WG is working on the creation of a Local Initiative to collaborate hand in hand with the Universal Acceptance Steering Group, UASG. The WG is currently working on two main projects: the first project is to verify the 100 most used sites in 23 countries in the region, following the guidelines of the UASG Ambassador for our region, Mark Datysged, and the second project is to train LAC technicians and end users on universal acceptance.

DNS WOMEN <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0011CwYbjwIliwOfIdJdv72WlgSHg3zhFaBJRk5KLP4yg-2C...> A POWERFUL NETWORK Women engagement in technology areas has still been growing in recent decades, but we still have not achieved the desired progress. Some countries in our region show that there is a chance to change this reality: Argentina; Bolivia; Guatemala; Panama, Trinidad Tobago, among others have more than 50% of women trained in science and technology areas!
At ICANN, women presence is not yet what we expect, but it is more relevant when compared to other Boards of Directors around the world: we went from having 5 women on the Board to having 7 now.
In LACRALO, particularly, there was a strong women presence since the beginning. They are in most ALSes, as well as in leadership positions. Faced with this scenario, in 2009, Vanda Scartezini, together with other women around the world, created the DNS WOMEN <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0011CwYbjwIliwOfIdJdv72WlgSHg3zhFaBJRk5KLP4yg-2C...> , an organization which supports and trains women on DNS areas. Today we have around 400 participants, and an organization incorporated in Brazil that is going to apply to become an ALS.
We invite women related to science and technology areas in the region to join this important network.
Vanda Scartezini Founding Member of DNS Women LACRALO - BRAZIL GET TO KNOW OUR COMMUNITY ALS Asociación Panameña de Derecho y Nuevas Tecnologías (APANDETEC <#m_-4495682219132576247_>) The Asociación Panameña de Derecho y Nuevas Tecnologías (APANDETEC) is a non for-profit organization created in March 2003. For seventeen years, the association has contributed to the national and international advancement of the interaction between law and information technology, promoting research, study, development and the correct implementation of new technologies in public and private processes and services, as well as data and related rights as essential tools for socioeconomic progress.
In addition to participating in legislative discussion processes and organizing cybersecurity and prevention of digital violence campaigns, they also deliver talks to children and young people and have a space in the program "Legal en Redes" on Next tv.
Since June 2016, we have been part of ICANN, as an ALS member of LACRALO.
