[FYI] Call for Participation Announced! - 42nd Internationalization & Unicode Conference, Santa Clara, CA - September 10-12, 2018
Hello all, I think the Internationalization and Unicode Conference (IUC42) is a very good audience for Universal Acceptance messages. I encourage people to consider proposing talks or tutorials for this conference. The conference is 10-12 September, 2018, in Santa Clara, California, USA. The deadline to submit proposals is 9 March, 2018. Last year they let me do a tutorial on Universal Acceptance (domain names and email addresses) in general. It went well, and I intend to propose that again. Also, last year they let me do a presentation on "Universal Acceptance of non-Latin email addresses and domain names: how does your framework rate?", based on this group's UASG0018 note. I think I want to propose something about current UA activity, but updated from the 2017 content. There is a lot of good UA activity going on, much of it by people in this group. I would be pleased to see multiple proposals on UA-related topics submitted to IUC42. It won't all get accepted, but probably more strong proposals will lead to more good content getting accepted. I agree that coordination within the UA group would be nice. We could share ideas about what topics and what messages are important to cover. We could figure out who is the best messenger for each topic. We could form into teams to jointly present. We could encourage each other. We could review draft presentations. However, I also think that we should not let coordination be an obstacle. If someone wants to propose a talk on UA, they should not be blocked trying to get permission from this group. As I have stated before, one of the root causes of UA problems is the lack of Unicode and programming internationalisation education in schools and universities eg students graduate having only ever considered ASCII. So I am happy to give a presentation or workshop entitled "How I Internationalised my Computer Science Teaching" But .... I need funding to cover my travel costs from England, accommodation ...etc... Any organisation on this list willing to fund my attendance at IUC42? Don, can you fund it? I am not going to apply for funding from any academic Computer Science funding body because I know it will be a waste of time.
