UA at IUC? [or: Call for Participation Announced! - 41st Internationalization & Unicode Conference, Santa Clara, CA - October 16-18, 2017]
Hello, colleagues: I'm a big fan of, and regular participant in, the annual Internationalization and Unicode Conference (IUC), brought to us by the people who brought us Unicode. I imagine that people who are interested in Universal Acceptance are likely to be interested in this conference, and may well have important contributions they could make to it. So, #1, I'd like to make everyone in UASG aware that the IUC has a call for participation. The deadline for proposals is Friday, 24. March, 2017. Please consider proposing a talk if you have something that the IUC audience would benefit from. And, #2, I don't recall there being a proper presentation of the UASG activity at the IUC conference. (Dave Crocker gave a 5-minute "lightning talk" about Universal Acceptance and the UASG, but that was barely enough time to say that it existed.) I would like to see a proposal about the Universal Acceptance Initiative submitted to the conference this year. If someone is already working on this, I would like to talk to you off-list and see if it makes sense to work together. If there is no existing effort, I would like to start one. I welcome collaboration. I will see to it that a proposal gets submitted. At least in the past, they were small enough to allow serious networking outside of a presentation. Talk works best when you have information to impart, discussion works best if you are looking for input / shared approaches. If UA looks different for different protocols/processes/programs then why not have more than one talk? A./

The best talks are ones that offer concrete, how-to take aways. In the discussion of the specification we felt that the low-level API and utilities were respective of IDNA and international email addresses but (most of) the high level apps were not taking advantage of those tools yet. A presentation of a survey of the different platforms and the relevant API that support IDNA and a little on how to use them, as well as identifying key high level apps that do or don’t support IDNA will go a long way with this group and the survey will help shame the apps that are most needed to add support and lead the way for others. tex From: ua-discuss-bounces@icann.org [mailto:ua-discuss-bounces@icann.org] On Behalf Of Asmus Freytag (c) Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2017 10:20 PM To: Edmon Chung; ua-discuss@icann.org Subject: Re: [UA-discuss] UA at IUC? And, #2, I don't recall there being a proper presentation of the UASG activity at the IUC conference. (Dave Crocker gave a 5-minute "lightning talk" about Universal Acceptance and the UASG, but that was barely enough time to say that it existed.)
I would like to see a proposal about the Universal Acceptance Initiative submitted to the conference this year. If someone is already working on this, I would like to talk to you off-list and see if it makes sense to work together. If there is no existing effort, I would like to start one. Ram, Don, colleagues: The nature of this conference and its attendees means we might focus differently that we would for a more general audience. People at IUC are well aware that top-level domains and email addresses can be non-ASCII. They include some of the developers of the low-level APIs that we are finding support Universal Acceptance already. Some can probably read raw Punycode. We don't need to persuade them that UA is a good thing. I think the most interesting story we have to tell is *the experiences of people who are actively running* email services with address internationalisation, and who are running domains with non-ASCII names (top-level or lower-level). So, case studies like Data Xgen Technologies work with email to .भारत (.bharat) , as described in the UASG013D-161222-EN case study, would be excellent. From his postings to this list, I think Dr. Ajay Data would be a very informative speaker for the IUC audience, if he were willing to make the trip to California. Are there other good case studies to share? André Schappo using his 小山@电邮.在线 address? Someone operating a website in the gTLD .РУС (.rus), as another data point beyond Dr. Ajay Data's ПОЧТА.РУС? The second most interesting story we have to tell is *our evaluation of UA compliance*. What are our criteria for compliance? What have we found out about the compliance by low-level APIs, libraries, and frameworks? What have we found out about compliance by the user-level apps built on these APIs? It's the same approach taken by the /Criteria for evaluating programming languages and frameworks with regard to their UA compliance/ paper we were working on in December. For this audience, it would benefit from being developed a bit further. I feel like this is a topic I could present well, with help from the group. Several others could also do a good job, I have no doubt. Talking about the UASG itself is sadly not all that interesting a topic. The UASG should get mentioned in passing towards the end of a presentation about case studies or about UA compliance. It shouldn't be the main topic of a proposal. The IUC usually has only a few hundred attendees, so it's a very good venue for meeting people between sessions. It attracts people doing the work of implementing core technologies, so come if you want access to such people. The IUC is unfortunately not all that generous to its presenters. Presenters have to pay for their own travel, and 50% of their own registration. For each talk, the IUC discounts one registration by 50%, and offers two nights of free hotel stay. If there are multiple presenters for a talk, they have to find a way to share this benefit between them. And, the conference is in the USA, which is getting to be a more and more difficult country to visit. It would be good at this stage not just to draw up some proposals, but also get commitments from people to make the trip and be presenters, if the proposals are accepted. I must confess, part of my motivation is to come up with a proposal good enough to get accepted — and so secure me the registration and hotel benefit. I work for myself, and my boss would rather not pay full registration. ;-) If others in UASG want to be presenters for these proposals, then I need to find another proposal for myself. Jim,
If you’re familiar with the process and nature, please do go ahead and create a proposal.
We can help with collateral, presentations, and a speaker.
Perhaps the following:
An introduction to Universal Acceptance
Two marked changes in the Internet name space have occurred, but are not widely adopted. Hundreds of new Top Level Domains (including IDNs) and support for non-ascii mailbox names in email (EAI - Email Address Internationalisation)
This presentation will provide an introduction to the topics, an introduction to the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG - www.uasg.tech <http://www.uasg.tech>) and the work that is underway to provide documentation, resources, and mitigation efforts.
The presentation will actively seek out participants from the conference attendees who will be able to share what they learn when they return home.
——
Internationalisation and Unicode in domain names and email addresses - practical steps toward universal acceptance
This presentation will introduce Universal Acceptance and the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG - www.uasg.tech <http://www.uasg.tech>) and outline the work that is underway to facilitate acceptance of all domain names and all email addresses.

Perhaps something else.
