Your question reminded me on a discussions that we have had in previous leadership mandates.

Back then, we discussed also UA day, which will be celebrated like this - for months not just one day, and the outcome of that event was always yet another question mark.

In all countries we already have UA days, which was supported through LIs, and those were the dates that IDN/New Gs were already celebrating. Those days are carefully selected according to local culture or history. Sometimes, it was some religious or cultural day of education, literacy or similar, and sometimes it was just a day of opening TLD. In other words, natural UA day in each county, throughout the whole year.

By knowing that, we were mostly against some centralized UA day, with questionable bound to history, dictating to local communities when to celebrate. Outcome of such event, as we thought, would be minimal compared to natural local UA days. We always thought that it was better to support local celebrations. Not to duplicate them and not to move them to some locally not important date.

Yes, we could always organize some central UA event, where some ICANN board members/CEOs/leadership can speak about UA. It could be called UA day(s), and we can talk about importance of UA the whole week. But there was always that question: And what's the outcome of that? Usual suspects talking to usual suspects?

2023 to 24 May 2023. That is a span of more than three months.

What does the word "Day" in the phrase "UA Day" mean exactly?
