Of cause the other new problem is the substantial delay in HD TV transmissions. One can toast the new year twice even in a single location ;) -- Lester Caine - G8HFL ----------------------------- Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk

Mia Bennett pointed out in her blog that there's one place on the planet where the start of the New Year is undefined, namely the North Pole. One could hold a pretty wild New Year's Eve party there.... Bennett M. When is it New Year's at the North Pole? Pray enlighten me: why is it possible to decide when the New Year starts at the South Pole but not at the North Pole? :D [?] On Thu, Jan 1, 2015 at 3:42 PM, Paul Eggert <eggert@cs.ucla.edu> wrote:

There are people at the South Pole. Because the South Pole is inhabited, and has a local time (same as its supply base McMurdo). The North Pole is in international waters, where the convention is to use meridians to delimit time zones, and that convention breaks down at the pole. You can see images of past New Year's Eve celebrations at Amundsen-Scott here: http://www2.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/pole-gear.html I can sympathize with those photos, as right now I'm working in an unheated office -- UCLA shuts off the heat during winter break to save money.
