I am watching for news related to Cambridge Bay officially changing to UTC-06 to match the new time zone in Alberta. It appears Nunavut is ready to reconsider time zones across their entire territory. Justice Minister George Hickes provided the update Tuesday in the legislative assembly in response to a question from Kugluktuk MLA Simon Kuliktana. “As recently as earlier this month, my officials from Justice have been in communication with other counterparts in Northwest Territories to discuss this matter. So yes, it is something that’s in front of me,” Hickes said. . . . Nunavut’s three time zones add “complexity” to the issue, Hickes said, adding there would be public consultation before any changes are made and new legislation would be required for implementation. https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/nunavut-explores-ending-time-changes/ The full discussion can be read starting on page 11 (PDF page 17) of the Nunavut Hansard for May 26th. https://www.assembly.nu.ca/sites/default/files/2026-05/20260526_Blues_Englis...

I saw this in the Nunavut *Hansard* as well, but gathered from the minister's responses that, given the mention of public consultation "develop[ing] our strategy going forward," it is perhaps not likely to come up legislatively during the current spring sitting which ends on 11 June. Meanwhile, Northwest Territories started their legislative sitting on Wednesday 27 May, and I don't yet see any DST-related discussion published in their *Hansard* through Friday. Their spring sitting only runs through this Thursday, 4 June. -- Tim Parenti
The way Bill 13 was written (assent granted March 31, 2021) it appears no further legislation is needed in NWT. The Act required a public engagement that was completed in 2022 (published January 2023). Accepting the results and defining standard time should be able to be done in executive session of the council. I hope NWT does not wait until the October sitting to announce an effective date. 5. (1) This Act comes into force on a day to be fixed by order of the Commissioner. Opportunity for public engagement (2) Before this Act comes into force, the Minister shall ensure that there is an opportunity for public engagement with residents of the Northwest Territories regarding the elimination of the time change and the setting of standard time. I agree that Nunavut is on a slower path. Five months to the end of DST ... or not if action is taken in the areas that want to stay on DST this fall.
