Australia - Broken Hill - Yancowinna

Broken Hill, or more precise, the whole county of Yancowinna, differs from the rest of New South Wales, as clearly stated in the TZ database. Problem is: what is the "county of Yancowinna"? The Australian Standard Time Act 1987 mentions this county, but doesn't mention the county boundaries. Once they were known, but they have disappeared from recent maps. Finally I found a scan of an old map from the Land Registry, showing the Yancowinna county. Found on the website of The Sydney Morning Herald: <http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/08/29/1062050651816.html?oneclick=true> Click on field number 2 or download the map directly: <http://www.smh.com.au/specials/leases/pdf/map2.pdf> The following places are within the county boundaries: Broken Hill, The Gorge, Mount Gipps, Silverton, Stephens Creek, Wahratta, Yanco Glen. The name "Wahratta" is not perfectly readable from the map, but I've checked the name and location against the Australia file from the GEOnet Names Server <http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/> Oscar van Vlijmen 2005-04-23

I found 2 entries that spoke of another unmarked time zone in Australia of +8:45 Caiguna-Eucla-Border Village (far south-eastern part of state) Eucla is the easternmost town in Western Australia. It is located at 31°43′ S 128°53′ E, on the Great Australian Bight approximately 13 kilometres (8 miles) west of the South Australian border. It is in the Shire of Dundas in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It has a population of about 50 people. from Wikipedia.org and Please note that a small portion of Western Australia from the town of Caiguna to Eucla to Border Village is UTC/GMT +8 hours 45 minutes. These towns are located close to the border between South Australia and Western Australia with the town of Eucla being almost on the border and the town of Border Village being virtually on the border. These towns are found along the Eyre Highway which connects Western Australia to South Australia. The stretch of road between these towns is famous for being the longest stretch of straight road in Australia. from timegenie.com -----Original Message----- From: Oscar van Vlijmen [mailto:ovv@hetnet.nl] Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2005 9:34 AM To: TZ-list Subject: Australia - Broken Hill - Yancowinna Broken Hill, or more precise, the whole county of Yancowinna, differs from the rest of New South Wales, as clearly stated in the TZ database. From the story at <http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/null.html> "At Caiguna, W.A (about 350km from the W.A/S.A border) you switch to "Perth" time..."
This means that Caiguna is NOT on CWAT time (UTC+8:45), but the following villages are: Border Village (South Australia) Eucla Mundrabilla Madura Cocklebiddy The last one, Cocklebiddy, is my interpretation. It just lies in the Nuytsland Natural Reserve, but it could well be in the CWAT timezone. Does anybody know? Oscar van Vlijmen 2005-05-03

Apologies if this has already been covered. I checked the latest tzdata file and there seems to be no mention of it.
etc. To add some details & questions: see my posting from 2005-05-03 Alex: reading your story, Cocklebiddy _is_ indeed in the CWAT zone? And can we be sure of Caiguna? ---------- From: Oscar van Vlijmen Date: Tue, 03 May 2005 10:54:02 +0200 To: Bill Bonnett, TZ-list Subject: Re: Australia - CWAT Resent-Date: Tue, 3 May 2005 04:54:46 -0400 (EDT)

I made a point of checking when I passed through on my way back. To be sure, however, I just phoned the BP John Eyre Motel in Caiguna [+61 (0)8 9039-3459] and asked. They do NOT observe Central Western time there, I was told (but they have, of course, taken on daylight saving like the rest of WA).

Yes, it is. It is 64 km east of Caiguna and thus about 63 km east of the sign marking the western extremity of the "Central Western Time Zone". I express my hesitation about calling it "Central WA Time" (CWAT) elsewhere.

Not sure whether this one made it to the list or not, so sorry if it's a duplicate. Originally sent 2006 December 09 16:13:35 GMT+11:00. On 2006 Dec 09, at 01:31, Oscar van Vlijmen wrote:
