Was Re: [tz] EST/EDT vs AEST/AEDT in AQ [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED] I think the research for the correct ISO country for Macquarie Island is easier followable if kept in a separate thread. On Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 10:45 AM, Tobias Conradi <mail.2012@tobiasconradi.com> wrote:

We are simply trying to get the daylight savings abbreviations changed to what is *actually* used in Australia. Macquarie Island in the IANA time zone database is AQ and not Australia.
Macquarie island is part of Australia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macquarie_Island
In Wikipedia, not in the IANA time zone database.
ftp://ftp.iana.org/tz/data/zone.tab
AQ -5430+15857 Antarctica/Macquarie Macquarie Island Station, Macquarie Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macquarie_Island categorized as belonging to Tasmania, which in turn is given as part of Australia. What is the reason to have Macquarie Island as AQ Antartica in the IANA time zone database? -- Tobias Conradi Rheinsberger Str. 18 10115 Berlin Germany http://tobiasconradi.com

Macquarie Island is politically Australian territory, but geographically on the Antarctic continent. I don't know if the 'ISO 3166 2-character country code' zone.tab refers to is supposed to reference the political or geographic code, but it at least seems consistent with respect to the Antarctic bases and islands. -- Stuart Bishop <stuart@stuartbishop.net> http://www.stuartbishop.net/

Pacific Ocean, between NZ and AQ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macquarie_Island "Macquarie Island lies in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between New Zealand and Antarctica, at 54°30S, 158°57E." Southern Ocean http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/629 "Macquarie Island (34 km long x 5 km wide) is an oceanic island in the Southern Ocean" The Antarctic Treaty 1959-12-01 http://www.ats.aq/documents/ats/treaty_original.pdf "The provisions of the present Treaty shall apply to the area south of 60° South Latitude"
I don't know if the 'ISO 3166 2-character country code' zone.tab refers to is supposed to reference the political or geographic code, I don't know why that field should be used differently and am not aware of other deviations from the ISO standard.
but it at least seems consistent with respect to the Antarctic bases and islands. The others can be in the ISO country AQ, while Macquarie simply is not. All the other coordinates for AQ given in zone.tab are "south of 60° South Latitude" and fall under the Antarctic Treaty.

And I think consensus is that it sits on Antarctic continent. There are no ISO country codes for the oceans, so the choice is political allegiance (AU) or geographic location (AQ).

Ok, the ISO 3166-1 list uses the "south of 60°" definition. I think you are right and AU would be correct. Continental borders seem to be fuzzy things, and the timezone can straddle them like Europe/Istanbul. -- Stuart Bishop <stuart@stuartbishop.net> http://www.stuartbishop.net/

I'm pretty sure it isn't on the Antarctic continent, neither on the continental shelf itself, nor the Antarctic plate. -- -=( Ian Abbott @ MEV Ltd. E-mail: <abbotti@mev.co.uk> )=- -=( Tel: +44 (0)161 477 1898 FAX: +44 (0)161 718 3587 )=-
