Nunavut explores ending time changes
I am watching for news related to Cambridge Bay officially changing to UTC-06 to match the new time zone in Alberta. It appears Nunavut is ready to reconsider time zones across their entire territory. Justice Minister George Hickes provided the update Tuesday in the legislative assembly in response to a question from Kugluktuk MLA Simon Kuliktana. “As recently as earlier this month, my officials from Justice have been in communication with other counterparts in Northwest Territories to discuss this matter. So yes, it is something that’s in front of me,” Hickes said. . . . Nunavut’s three time zones add “complexity” to the issue, Hickes said, adding there would be public consultation before any changes are made and new legislation would be required for implementation. https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/nunavut-explores-ending-time-changes/
Nunavut was a lot of fun for us around the turn of the century, when they standardized on CST+CDT in fall 1999, then when that didn't work in eastern Baffin (people rebelled) they standardized on EST in fall 2000, and then when that didn't work in western Nunavut (other people rebelled) they went back to three time zones in spring 2001. We couldn't reliably record all the unofficial times kept during that confusing period. I hope things go more smoothly this time. One comment during the confusion was from Violet Charlie in Taloyoak: “It was depressing. We’d go to work and the dogs were still sleeping.” Spitzer A. Nunavut abandons Nunavut time.
