I agree with kre: The original design was wonderful. The major problem was that it was not---quite---compatible with 4BSD and with SysV. Yet the incompatibilities were in areas that everyone agrees were weak, and, moreover, in areas that were mutually incompatible anyway! Any new standard *must* break some code. Let it break code that was acknowledged insufficent, and by replacing it with code that has been tested and found satisfactory. Chris
