Marcus Island is the name used by Americans for Minami-Tori-shima. It's located at about 24 deg. 18 min. N., 153 deg. 58 min. E., which I think makes it the easternmost, as well as one of the southernmost, of the Japanese islands. It was administered by the U.S. military from the end of World War II to 1968. This background should help to explain why it's referred to by its American name, and why it might be expected to lie in a different time zone. -- Gwillim Law
