(was Further un-ASCII-fication and typos) Unfortunately, this commit (363a1be6dfb3c0e5398b28cb4f0f3778157ddbe7 <https://github.com/eggert/tz/commit/363a1be6dfb3c0e5398b28cb4f0f3778157ddbe7>) introduced changes to usno1989, which specifically says at the top that "no corrections have been made"; that is, it is unchanged from the original. This is distinct from usno1989a, which appears to be the same data, but corrected. This raises the question, why are we retaining the usno* files in the first place? Although I'm sure there was a reason originally, it seems to have faded over time, and the most recent edition is 16 years old. Does anyone know if there is a concrete reason for why Etc/GMT, Etc/UTC and Etc/UCT are three separate zones? I would think that Etc/UTC would be the only zone entry and the others would be links. Thanks.-Matt

This change should make no difference if you use Emacs to read these files in a UTF-8 locale. Garrett Wollman reported privately that XEmacs 21.4.22, the current stable version, doesn't work with the UTF-8 recently introduced into our commentary. For example, the UTF-8 character '−' (MINUS SIGN), which is stored as the three bytes "\342\210\222", displays as 'â\210\222'. For proper names this is annoying but tolerable, as there's little loss in utility from (say) 'Racoviță' to its display form 'RacoviÈ\233Ä\203'. But for symbols this is a real pain that can make it hard to understand the documentation, e.g., 'Release 2014e – 2014-06-12 21:53:52 −0700' displays as 'Release 2014e â\200\223 2014-06-12 21:53:52 â\210\2220700'. To work around this problem, make the following substitutions in commentary to mostly revert these symbols to their pre-UTF-8 versions: '§' -> 'section', '°' -> 'degrees', '±' -> '+-', '–' -> '-' (en dash), '—' -> '--' (em dash), '′' -> "'", '″' -> '"', '→' -> '->', '−' -> '-' (minus sign), '≤' -> '<='. we're still having trouble with tzcode using unreasonable amounts of stack. things were somewhat ameliorated by defining the oddly-named ALL_STATE. that causes tzcode to allocate tzload's 'u_t' on the heap instead of the stack. that takes about 40KiB off tzload's stack requirements, which was by far the biggest offender. unfortunately, later on in tzload there's a 'struct state' allocated on the stack. on LP64, that's about 18KiB, which -- even if it's not 40KiB -- is still unreasonable in one frame! LP32 is about 9KiB less, because our LP32 time_t was only 32-bit, so we've been getting away with it there --- threads with 16KiB stacks could safely call tzcode functions. but this isn't true for LP64. (note that these rough figures are with TZ_MAX_TIMES at 1200 --- we haven't yet bumped that to the 2000 it seems to be at head.) we'll fix this in Android (the first hunk in https://android-review.googlesource.com/#/c/94653/) but it would be nice if this were fixed upstream too so we don't have to diverge more than we already have. --elliott
